So I've pretty much set my mind on plasti-dipping my wheels but I had one question, how hard would it be to get off? I was wondering if anyone here had worked with the stuff on their rims and then removed it. Thanks

I can't be super helpful, but I have been looking at putting it on my hood to cut down on glare. You can find plenty of people on youtube that show it being very easy to take off (like peeling off plastic from new electronics), but it seems depend on how smooth the surface is.

It probably doesn't matter as much with the wheels, but it also seems hard to get a nice even texture when spraying it on a large flat surface.

I know some people who have done it on their stock rims. It looks pretty cheap. It's like fake matte black.

Peeling the stuff off is pretty easy though. So, you can probably try it on one rim and make sure you like the look of it first.

Hey do you know any good places in the NYC/LI/NJ area that do good good powder Coating work?

I was thinking of getting my wheels done this summer due to some peeling issues on one of my rims. Was thinking just just powder coating all four if the price is decent.

Also i've read the heat involved in the powder coating can weaken the metal in wheels, but not sure how true that is

I doubt that the heat would affect the integrity of the wheels, IMO.

I did my wheels through www.elitecoatingsny.com for my Lotus. Opted for gloss black.




I signed up with them as a dealer, so I get a small discount from them. I paid just under $100 per wheel, including dismounting/remounting and rebalancing of the wheels/tires. I don't know what their regular pricing is though. If you want you can drop the wheels off by me, I'll have them pick it up by me so you can at least get my pricing. Let me know.

+1 on powdercoating. My A-Specs turned out great!

I've used Plasti-Dip once on my car, for the emblems. The stuff is very easy to work with and remove when wanted. Here's what I started with...



Once sprayed with a few coats...



I used the end of a mechanical pencil and pulled back the stuff...



And the end result...



Stupid easy to use. You really can't mess it up BUT when it comes to doing wheels, I wouldn't. Either have it done properly or not at all.

Trim pieces I wouldn't object to. Wheels however (or any other larger surface) I don't think will look as good. Flaws will be much more noticed on a bigger surface.

I'll let you know, but since I don't have a spare set of wheels to drive on while my wheels get coated, I'll have to figure that part out first. Not sure If I can go on my own and wait while they coat them or if it takes a couple of days.

Thanks for the responses guys. The only reason I'm looking at using the Plasti-Dip is just to get a feel on how they'd look and I've got a couple of repairs I need to get done before I look at spending $300 on powder coating.

I wonder what how hard it would be to remove if I decided to spray paint over the Plasti-Dip?

lots of plasti-dipping on the clublexus board. there was a time i was considering myself, but just decided on getting modestly priced rims while re-using stock tires. i also considered using plasti-dip as a base coat, then painting and glossing myself. making the setup affordable, yet reversible. that could be an option for you as well. should be able to google some pics of this setup.

quality/appearance:

the plast-dip will look like black wheels from afar, but up close, there is zero shine. over time, they will dull and fade even further. since plasti-dip is rubber based, expect the quality of the material to be no different than the sidewall of your tire. upkeep for plastidip wheels would be done using tire gel. (just to give you a visual of what youre working with - much different than glossy, powdercoated wheels).

process:

to prevent uneven drying, and caliper protection, you will need to remove the wheels and lay them down flat before spraying. do about three coats per wheel. expect an entire day's work (assuming you dont have a lift, and will be doing one wheel at a time).

The turnaround time with them is usually 24 hours. You can leave your car here if you want (in my indoor service garage). I'm in Valley Stream, the very beginning of LI. The PC shop is in Plainview, about 25 minutes from me. Up to you.

imo, $400 for powdercoated wheels in 24 hours >>> 4 cans of plastidip, a full days work, and poor finished product.

If this was going to be a permanent thing I would get them powder coated without even questioning it, but since I'd like to have something that can be easily reversible, I'm taking this route I think.

Shoofin, you put DWS on your Lotus??? What a shame. You have a car that C&D titled in bold as having "Tenacious Grip and Sublime Steering" and you put an all season tire on it?
Perhaps, I'm missing something here.
If it was mine, it would sport the Yoko ADVAN A048's.

I replaced the Advan's with the DWS. I plan on having a 2nd set of wheels for the track and would have a more aggressive tire for that occasion, like the Yokohama, or Dunlop Direzza or Toyo Proxes R888. Driving the A048's and getting caught in the rain is not fun...Continental doesn't make the DW model in the front tire size I wanted, which is factory spec size, when driving on the street. I don't need the "S" designation of the DWS, I went with it because of price and performance/bang for the buck. The DWS is a great tire all around, but it doesn't like to get pushed too hard...take it from me, I know :wink:

Maker, I considered painting the wheels but God forbid I brush up against a curb, the powdercoating is a lot thicker. Plus the stock A-Specs were painted from factory and the paint failed in less than 5 years. I didn't want to risk it happening again.

Holy shit I almost fell out of my chair with laughter after reading that, I never considered that people would be so stupid as to leave the wheel on the car while trying to paint it. I guess I am giving people too much credit.

Anyways, unless you plan on changing the color of your wheels monthly (or sooner) I wouldn't do plasti-dip; it looks cheap imo. However, if you feel like changing the color yearly, I would just paint them. While not as easy to remove as plasti-dip, paint is still reversible (sanding, prep, paint) and isn't permanent like P/C'd, plus it looks a hell of a lot better.

Paint code is 36Y. Its a color Subaru offers on some of their wheels. It was sprayed at my shop.

I work at a shop. My painter did them. You can't buy the color it has to be mixed. The paint is DuPont.
