Picked up a BMW 335i

It's been a while since I have been on here but wanted to share my new to me BMW 335i. Thankfully it's CPO because the first and I mean first day I took it home the water pump blew out and the car went into limp mode. BMW was awesome and came and got it, gave me a loaner and had it back to me the same day. The wife was less than thrilled but all is well now.

Thanks. 2008. Drove one when they first came out and was in love but never got around to getting one until now. It reminds me of my old 04 STi with a luxurious ride, appointments and conveniences. Could not be happier and being older and wiser I am just in cruise mode.

At that year, you have the N54 inline 6 with the two turbos. Therefore, I highly recommend this: http://www.esstuning.com/products/ES...-Software.html

You'll get a tune that leaves the smooth daily driver and gives you a significant boost in HP and torque when you really want it.

Here's a copy of my dyno results after installing this tune on my 335 - https://acurazine.com/forums/showpos...postcount=1362

Thanks for the tips. I am looking for the premier forum for this car. Nothing quite like Acurazine for ease of use and finding stuff.

Any issues with the tune that have affected reliability or warranty?

Yeah, A-Zine is still the best forum out there. In terms of 3-series specific, go to http://www.e90post.com/forums/. A lot of the crowd is pretty lacking in maturity, but you can still find good info using the "search" function.

Reliability? None. ESS has never lost an engine.

Warranty? You'll have the ability to switch back and forth from your stock tune and the ESS one using a laptop for your service visits.

There are other tunes that will give you more HP (i.e. JB4, Cobb, etc.), but none that will leave your car as smooth for daily driving.

Congrats! As they said ^ a tune is a must, especially for a FI'd engine. All the best luck with it!

Nice ride!

At least you got the waterpump out of the way early.
E90 waterpumps are all just a "matter of time".

Yes, tell me about it. At the end of the day, I am glad it grenaded the first day rather than down the road. Funny thing is I test drove it the day before for 5 to 10 miles spiritedly.

Thanks. The M3 sedan was my goal but I just could not find one in my area that was priced right. I thought of buying outside my region and flying to pick something up but the thought of a breakdown on a new car and being miles from the dealership turned me off some.

Yea, I have always been a fan too. The CPO process was in depth. They replaced all 4 tires with run-flats, new wiper blades, rug mats, new brakes all around, alignment and of course a new water pump, lol.

OK gang. I have had the 335i for less than one week and it is back in the shop. Was driving around pretty normal with the family enjoying the car. I needed to merge onto traffic and got on the gas hard for about an eight of a mile and the next thing I know the yellow check engine light comes on and I can tell I am in limp mode. I get home and call the dealership and they told me to bring it in.

When I fired it back up the check engine light was off and it drove normal again but I could not trust that all was well so I took her on in. Dealership was cool and gave me a 2013 328i with X Drive, navi and the M package (I will give a review in another thread/way different cars).

I dunno man, i like this car a lot and have wanted one for many years but if it's going to spend this much time in the shop this may be a tough pill to swallow. Here are a few 328 pics.

My '09 CPO 335 has been a gem. Very few problems.

You don't need to own a car to know its general reliability. My friend has a 540i. It's in the shop at least once every three months.

Well it is a 10+ year old BMW your friend has..

Thats not what I would call "general reliability" of all BMWs.

I dont want to get into the consumer reports argument but dont you find it funny that they rated the worst BMW in the 2011 chart the 135i and 2012 has the X3 as the best? Yet it shares the same engine and basic electronics..

Oh look and Porsche is on the bottom but yet...

Its why I do not like these surveys.

I am by no means saying BMW is as reliable as the Japanese counterparts btw.

The Consumer Reports and JD Power lists are calculated differently. The JD Power one lists them as how many problems per 100 cars. It's a bit unclear how Consumer Reports scores are calculated.

Either way, BMW is in the lower 50th percentile on the majority of reliability reports.

The problems i seem to hear about keeps me away from a bmw. They are great looking cars, but It seems like most models have some issues. The 3 should be the most reliable though.
When someone says don't own one outside of the warranty, that tells me something. Same thing with Audi.

My friend has a 3 series and its been solid for 130K miles. I had a TL and it was constantly in the shop for stupid little stuff.

So, your anecdotal sample size of "1" is representative of the population? May I suggest an introductory stats class?

Just wow.

A mean to detect a potential failing WP is to get BMW-specific OBD codes. A code will be issued months in advance when a low-speed WP is detected. I check mine every 3-4 months for this.
