So, I'm confused. Why convert a 4S to RWD? Why not just start with a regular 911S?

There's many advantages. I guess a good number of people in the tuning community do it. Also they say the AWD effect is minimal anyway - it's not like a true AWD system - it mostly drives like a RWD car, and it transfers some power when there is slippage. Converting to RWD: more power put to the ground, a bit better fuel economy, RWD is generally more 'fun' to drive, those are the primary advantages.

oh and in regard to why not get a regular 911S, the 4S has the visually striking look of the Turbo, sans the wing. So if people want that look but want RWD, this is the way.

Well, I get why someone would prefer RWD to AWD, but I still don't get why they wouldn't just start with a RWD 911 in the first place. The 4S isn't exactly a common variant of the 911; there should be plenty of RWD 911s on the market. It just seems like a headache to convert the AWD over when one could just buy a RWD 911 and go from there.

I didn't see this when I posted. This explains some of it.

it's not "hard" to convert - all you have to do is disconnect a couple things. I mean, not as hard as you might think. It can be set back to stock the same way - it's not like it's a complete overhaul of the system.

actually I agree with you though, I would prefer the stock AWD setup, especially living in Chicago. Would be nice to have that when needed and make it a great DD.

yeah - like I'm not too big a fan of the regular 996 - and I don't think I'd ever consider buying one. But a Turbo or 4S,

btw that 4S, even being AWD, weighs only some 3250 lbs. It had a lot to do with the particular AWD system, which only added some 150 lbs compared to the RWD model. Really nice especially in today's era of bloated sports cars, in general. The same can be said for 911's in general.

You'd be surprised how many Porschephiles buy the 4S simply because of the wideboy over the 2s. It's only a few mms but it makes all the difference in the world.

The one you drove sounds like it was fun to drive, the 996-4s has a beautiful exhaust.

it's 59 mm's man!

yeah it was nice to drive. clutch/throttle modulation was kind of tough - I killed it a couple of times.
