Though it is sweet, it's a VW. I wouldn't drop $70k on a VW. It's a more bland Audi A8.

I saw the W12 Phaeton in Philadelphia like 2 years ago. The interior is drop dead gorgeous, I'd say it's even better than its Audi A8 counterpart.

THe Phaeton driver's seat is absolutley THE MOST COMFORTABLE SEAT I've ever had the pleasure of sitting in. I'd really like to have one as a daily driver. Hopefull the resale is very shitty and I can pick up one cheap down the road.......

The factory is pimp

But I agree that VW should leave the high priced luxury stuff to audi and porsche, and start putting out some decent cars for the people.

The days when Volkswagen translated to "people's car" are over

it is true they build the Phaeton and Bentleys there. I get some money magazine(it's not Money but one of the 18 money related magazines i got free subscription or cheap subscription to) they did like a 3 page write up on this plant.
only thing is I've worked in Honda's assembly plant. those wood floors would last about 1/2 minute with Honda workers. I've seen Honda employees knock out giant I beams accidently with a forklift. (they've i know of 5 forklifts in about 10 years) Honda's factory is nothing like this. no fancy glass or architechical work. it's looks like a GIANT tan pole barn (the motor plant about 1 million or 1.2 million square ft) the car plant(where the body molds and it final assemble done) it's about 5 million square ft and once again tan SUPER GIANT pole barn. almost every Honda assembly building i've seen pretty stright forward its designed to be simple and "no frills"
VW designed that factory to look fancy with all those windows and nice architect work.

now about the Phaeton. it's a short lived car. at 80 grand for a decent dressed up one. it's not worth it. a funeral home just replaced their Lincoln with a Phaeton. I was really surprised. I figured if they were gonna go that route they'd go with a A8 or maybe a RL.

"I certainly believe we own the best built cars in the world.
VW is doing it right."

so your saying you'd take this sedan over a new loaded E500 Benz or even a loaded S350 Benz or a new loaded 545i bmw or new 745Li bmw.
IMO: the Phaeton doesn't even touch these cars.

The Phaeton is starting to make a great pre-owned car, they don't hold their value for shit.

Not a bad car (very heavy though), wish they brought over the SWB......

For $70k, there are a fair amount of cars I would choose over a Phaeton V8.

To be fair, the E500/545i and Phaeton are aimed at 2 different markets.

The Phaeton is basically a luxury limo, the E500/545i are mid sized sport oriented sedans.

I would get a Phaeton over a V6 Sclass.

Would I get a Phaeton over let's say the new 750?......probably not.

I think we can all compare this to the Maxima Vs. G35/TL debate; "who would pay that much for a Nissan when you can get an Infiniti or Acura?" Same can be said about the Avalon. This car is awesome, and for that price, you sacrifice the badge for the money. I honestly would not buy one, only because the only car I'd buy in the Prestigious Luxury Sedan class would be the Audi A8 ( ). I'd LOVE a 545i ZSP for that price, or pocket some of the money and take an M45 Sport. However, that's just me. When I see that car driving down the street, it always amazes me, beautiful car. Again, it's just my preference of both luxury and sportiness in a car that would make me buy something else for that price.

The Phaeton is a great car, especially for the money.

However... it is in the wrong brand for several reasons.

For one, image and service. Image doesnt matter to me, but it does to many at that price range, thus it wont sell and will do VW a disservice. Service IS important. When you pay that much money, you expect and should be getting better service than say the 16 year old ditz with her Jetta that Daddy bought.

In the end, great car but horrible marketing/brand decision that will further ruin VW in the long run

the phaeton is a failure. it looks like a giant passat. a giant 70k passat. it is a joke. audi's ceo was fired for stating the truth. now vw claims it is a failure after they fired the audi ceo. lol, idiots. wtf is vw thinking? is audi not their luxury brand? a8 > phaeton failure.

The Phaeton is better than the A8. It really is. No contest whatsoever. To me thats what is so baffling. It just doesnt make sense to build such a car for VW when the combined efforts could have made an "uber" Audi.

Most comparison articles I have read disagree with your assessment.

Actually, the Phaeton V8 get's average reviews all around.

the luxury features on the phaeton goes FAR beyond the lux. features in the cars you mentioned. they thought of everything...except maybe the marketing.

Just read this feature list and then honestly try and tell me that any of the cars you mentioned even come close to what the phaeton offers:

I don't know why the Phaeton's V8 would get poorer remarks...it's the same one from the Audi. I think the VW is actually heavier than the Audi, which already is hefty in its own right, so in terms of performance, it may not be better.

But I like the Phaeton's interior over the A8's interior (which I think is very beautiful) and I think its exterior is better also.

I would buy the Phaeton over the A8. Same mechanicals, for less money. And I hate that hideous nose on the Audi.

I've seen a few rolling around town back home, and they look bad-ass. Better than any pictures I've seen.
