Paint would work better, IMHO..
Then again, I don't think I'd want my brake lamps to be so dark, it's more of a risk to get slammed from behind because the person behind might not be able to see your brake lights clearly, especially when there's glare..

Usually when people do the Night Shade treatment the tail light bulbs are replaced with much brighter LED's, best of both worlds....

i did that back in 98 on my Mystique and then in 99 on my Countour SVT, but i used black speaker mesh from radio shack. It looked cool at the time, but smelled like ass when it rained and then dried. Also, anyone who walked by the damn car had to touch it. Every time someone touched it it f'ing wrinkled. I gave up on the project shortly thereafter.
