One vehicle to traverse the world

Road trip time!

It can be anything, four wheels, two wheels, eighteen, whatever. Rules are that it has to be able to travel over land primarily (no boats or airplanes)

I normally wouldn't pick the wagon (like the coupe the best), but for a long road trip...??? Absolutely.

I was going to suggest a Glandelwagen but then I read this:

Do what Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman did and use a BMW GS R1200 motorcycle. The "Long Way Around" documentary was fantastic and I would recommend to everybody that they see it. Their journey from England through Europe, Asia and finishing in New York is pretty amazing.

^i was thinking some sort of BMW touring bike. Or a 22RE powered Hilux/pickup if I were taking the bumpy scenic route.

Watch that documentary and it will give you a good idea of what you're up against.

^will do.

I was gonna say unimog initially, but that'd be too easy. I mentioned the 22RE because you can probably get parts for it anywhere.

I'm lucky, I already have them. Seriously though, I'm an avid motorcyclist and up until a couple years ago used to take a number of solitary bike trips to different places. Things are just too busy now. I've always wanted to take a number of months and see other parts of the world on motorcycle. In a few years I'm going to do just that.

For that purpose I will take either:

One of my beloved KLRs. Simple, rough, uncomfortable at times, but nearly indestructible. Good for pavement, good for dirt. As Peter Egan, the automotive writer once remarked, "At any given time there is a number of KLRs traversing the globe".

Or my Honda Varadero. Six hundred pounds of Honda's interpretation of a big road going dirt bike. V-twin 1000 cc, heavy frame, long suspension travel, and huge fuel capacity. Sold in Europe where they are either traveling dirt roads or performing high speed motorway runs.

I want company and to carry more water, food, repair tools, and supplies than possible on the motorcycles while listening to XM radio in a climate-controlled interior.

Practically speaking, Range Rover. Off-roadish, powerful, comfy. Or any Jeep.

Audi A7. Why? It's perfect. 4 doors, "hatchback", nice performance, AWD, breathtaking design, and tons and tons of cabin tech. I'd say CTS-V too, but I'd prefer the smooth ride of an Audi for a long road trip.

If it involves off-roading? Range Rover...no questions asked. If you're talking just paved roads and highways, probably an Audi A8.

Holy crap, forgot about the SVT Raptor it's probably my favorite truck ever, too.

And nobody mentioned an RV yet? You could basically go on indefinitely on one of those. Dunno if they're fun to drive though, never had the pleasure.

Marauder. I don't know about you, but I'd rather not get stuck anywhere. Not to mention a trip around the world might mean transversing some land mines

You mean a 6.2L V8 with 411 HP and over 400 ft. lbs. of torque isn' t good enough for you?

If you bring the Raptor, be sure to fill the bed with frame repair equipment.
