The ol' TL = built SOLID

I'm making a right onto a road and there's a van in front of me. It's a "T" intersection, and the light is red, and we are gonna go to green any second. So, guy in van starts to go, I look again to make sure nobody ran the light, I gas and I turn to look and the focker is still sitting there...stopped for no reason (reason is he is a PA driver) and I slam on my brakes. Too late.... *bump*. We get out and the back bumper of the Ford Econoshit van is dented. I look at my car, little mark but no damage whatsoever. No cops or insurance...just gonna foot the bill (should be <$500 to fix or new bumper).

They just kept saying they couldn't believe there was no damage to my car because thier dent was approx. 12" x 6". They say "What is that? An Acura? I think I know what my next car will be" and I say "i'm not surprised.. it's built in Japan and not American made."

The end.

I don't know about "SOLID", I had a minor fender bender with a 2nd gen.

Stupid woman started turing off the hiway off ramp into her own lane with a yield sign. I look to the right to be sure no one is trying to cut me off, look back to the right and there she is parked in the lane.

Couldn't stop fast enough and rear ended her. It supposedly did $1600 in damage to her trunk and bumper. It left a little itty bitty scuff mark on the chrome of my truck's bumper.

The cop that came to make the accident report looked at my bumper and kind of chuckled on his way back to his car. I guess they mean it when they say "Like a Rock".

A side note: my liability insurance paid for her repair. Since there was no damage to my vehicle, I didn't need to pay my collision deductible. Total out of pocket costs were $0 ... till the next premium came ... ouch!

Rear steel bumpers on those vans are generally weaker then the front ones. I'm sure if the tables were turned your trunk would've been mangled if he rear-ended you.

Diff. like Ken said is First Gens are built in Japan vs. 2nd and 3rd gens are built in the US. But i'm sure if it were the front bumper it would've been bad like ^ said.

Anyone know how much a new bumper would be? I looked online and the discount stores had them for <$200 but I think it's gonna be like $400 for a new one...I doubt they will try to bang out a dent that size.

I've hit deer in my 1st gen TL at over 30 mph. Only scratched the paint.

I just remembered a few years back, I backed into a late ‘90s Camry with a Astro Cargo van at Home Depot (wasn't paying attention I know I'm stupid). I get out hoping I didn’t cause too much damage to the other person’s car. And to my surprise the plastic bumper on the Camry didn’t have one scratch on it while the steel bumper on the van was pushed in pretty bad.

And the difference in build quality is astounding. The Japanese made TL is rock solid, i a have a friend with one with over 120k on the odometer, no rattles, no paint cracks, no issues. Just gas and go.

In comparison, the newer TLs do sell much better, I know more colleauges with the car, they don't post here but every month, a tranny, paint, rattles, leather cracking, etc etc etc etc. Ridiculous.

Japenese made TL >Ohio built one

Its true. I have a 2003 TL-P and a 1997 TL-P

The interior is of higher quality in the '97, the paint is better and there is only a rattle in the glovebox.

We'll see how the 2003 turns out, but so far its more spartan than a 2003+ EX Accord.

Update:

I'm pissed. Got the estimate from this guy's body shop...$800 somethin bucks to fix. Apparantly they need to repaint part of the car?!?! I thought I just dented the van and I really don't think that the dent couldv'e gone into the paint, but I don't remember. This sucks soo much. They are getting an OEM bumper for $400, which I don't blame them for. But they have to repaint something...like 20 hours of labor and paint and..ughhh...

sorry for the rant.
