Usually, in some form or another, fuel leaks into the exhaust system. When the exhaust backfires, boom. I believe I've read on FChat that there are around 30 parts in the fuel hoses.
However, some fires have been caused by oil leaks, & even some to a small degree due to improper maintenance (older models) or in the F430's cases, I believe the exhaust brackets. The 458 had a small number of fires, but there was a recall that fixes them.
