It sucks living out in the country because we don't have access to a lot of things, including advanced motorcycle classes.

Kinda scary that your accident involved a deer. Coming home from a movie two nights ago, we counted at least ten seperate groups of deer hanging out right next to the shoulder on a 20 mile stretch of road. I've never hit a deer in a car, but I did hit a 2,000 lb. black Angus bull head on going about 75 mph. Wasn't pretty. Don't even want to think about what that would do to a bike.

Anyway, thanks for the advice. Great pic, btw.

Wow, I'm jealous. I want a bike so bad but the wife isn't really into the idea. I too am looking at the Ninja 250s. What I am probably going to do is take the MSF course first... then decide if I want to continue with the bike idea.

But congrats and stay safe!!

The leather jackets are pretty damn hot in the summer... that's why I don't wear mine.

But there are mesh jackets that are made for the summer that supposedly even help cool you. It isn't as protective as leathers but it's better than a t-shirt.

That's a great motorcycle you choose to learn on. Just take some safety courses and don't ride like the streets are a racetrack.

The best thing you can remember when your riding is the streets are under constant change. Vehicles leaking fluids (oil, transmission fluid, gas, radiator fluid, water from A/C). Trucks spilling crap (sand, rocks). So even if your on the same road you ride down every day it may not behave the same if your pushing the bike.

And don't let them see you, make *sure* they see you. Ride defensively.

Ignore any of the pre-maddona boys who even mention (laugh) your starter bike. They probably spend more time in front of the mirror than they do out riding. Image isn't more important than your well being. These are the idiots who buy 600cc+ bikes to start on and think they know how to ride. They usually end up winning darwin awards...

I don't ride the rice rockets anymore myself, I've moved on to cruisers.

Safe riding!

No problem. Be careful and enjoy yourself. Motorcycling is a great way to relax, and you'll be amazed at the other enthusiasts you'll meet on the road.

Take care and enjoy the ride.

that baby ninja will have plenty of get up for you to learn on. definitely heed the words already spoken here, and always, always wear your gear.

you mentioned that you can't reach the ground on both feet while straddling the bike, you may want to look into getting the seat/saddle worked on. any decent upholstery place can remove or replace the foam and padding on the stock seat, effectively lowering the seat position.

keep the rubber side down, and most definitely take the MSF course.

For the ppl with bikes. How hot are those jackets that you wear? Is that the only thing that provides any protection (upper body), or is there other stuff you can get?
It seems to depend on the jacket. Leather, of course, is very hot. It also offers the greatest protection against abrasion. The new ballistic nylon jackets and gear is very good as well, and probably somewhat cooler. Protection on a motorcycle won't protect you from everything, but it certainly will offer a degree of protection. Whenever I ride I wear a ballistic FirstGear jacket with full armor, ballistic FirstGear overpants, leather riding gloves, boots, and a full face helmet. Its warm at times, but I wouldn't ride any other way. Considering the weather you're currently having in Ontario right now, you would most likely feel uncomfortable, but so is having road rash removed and skin grafts. I was wearing the identical gear when I struck the dear I spoke of earlier, and except for the left knee grinding to the bone, I had no other abrasions. Despite the numerous fractures, I'm sure it would have been much worse without the gear.

Terry

Thanks! I work out maybe... once a year. My work is pretty intense, though. Carrying 50 lb. sacks of dog food all day and having 155 lb. Great Danes drag you around does much for muscle definition. And until about two years ago I played softball, basketball, or tennis on a near daily basis. Wish I had the time to do it now!

Nice wheels Moog!

I would recommend getting the heavier ballistic nylon ones...and just use the vents...those mesh jackets just dont feel right....

mesh is a bad option...it really shouldn't even be an option for gear. in any type of slide, the mesh will easily break apart. at best, it will hold up, but you'll end up with pieces of the fabric in your road rash. that will make for a fun experience when the nurse tries to pull pieces of mesh out while cleansing the wound.

My insurance for my XJ 600 was $150 for 12 months - that was 2 years ago though. Have rates gone up that much?
