Anyway, thanks for the advice. Great pic, btw.

take a look at the Buell's when you're ready for something alittle bigger.....that seems to be the sportbike of choice for the (attractive) ladies at our local bike nights

But there are mesh jackets that are made for the summer that supposedly even help cool you. It isn't as protective as leathers but it's better than a t-shirt.

That's a great motorcycle you choose to learn on. Just take some safety courses and don't ride like the streets are a racetrack.
The best thing you can remember when your riding is the streets are under constant change. Vehicles leaking fluids (oil, transmission fluid, gas, radiator fluid, water from A/C). Trucks spilling crap (sand, rocks). So even if your on the same road you ride down every day it may not behave the same if your pushing the bike.
And don't let them see you, make *sure* they see you. Ride defensively.
Ignore any of the pre-maddona boys who even mention (laugh) your starter bike. They probably spend more time in front of the mirror than they do out riding. Image isn't more important than your well being. These are the idiots who buy 600cc+ bikes to start on and think they know how to ride. They usually end up winning darwin awards...
I don't ride the rice rockets anymore myself, I've moved on to cruisers.
Safe riding!

It sucks living out in the country because we don't have access to a lot of things, including advanced motorcycle classes.

that baby ninja will have plenty of get up for you to learn on. definitely heed the words already spoken here, and always, always wear your gear.
you mentioned that you can't reach the ground on both feet while straddling the bike, you may want to look into getting the seat/saddle worked on. any decent upholstery place can remove or replace the foam and padding on the stock seat, effectively lowering the seat position.
keep the rubber side down, and most definitely take the MSF course.

mesh is a bad option...it really shouldn't even be an option for gear. in any type of slide, the mesh will easily break apart. at best, it will hold up, but you'll end up with pieces of the fabric in your road rash. that will make for a fun experience when the nurse tries to pull pieces of mesh out while cleansing the wound.

My insurance for my XJ 600 was $150 for 12 months - that was 2 years ago though. Have rates gone up that much?
