Question North Carolina drivers

Hey guys,

I live in MA. I'm thinking of buying a truck in NC. My plan is to fly down there and drive it home.

My question is does NC offer a temporary license plate so I can drive it home legally.

This is what Florida does..... trying to figure out if NC does the same thing. I know in MA they don't offer temp plates.

"Non-residents also are eligible to secure a temporary license plate for "in-transit" purposes if they purchase a vehicle in Florida and want to drive it back home. However, proof of insurance (from Florida or home state) and sales tax in the amount required by the home state must be paid."

I've slapped my plate from my car on the used car & drove it home. Did it a few times from MA to FL, & NY to FL.
Never had a problem.

Every single time my parents have bought a car that we didn't keep the old license plate we've gotten a 30 day temporary tag. The dealer that you are buying ur car from should give you one, and if not I would check with the DMV or Tag office.

In MA you have 7 days from purchase of the car to transfer the registration that you're "using" in the car to the "new" car. As long as you have the title/bill of sale you should be fine till you get home. Just register it when you get home.

I've always just slapped a plate on it and drove it...

Back in my younger/crasier days, me and the DMV didn't "get along" that well, so I'm done lots of "creative" things with registrations "Legally" has always been a word that is open to interpetation in my book

BTW, we're got a MA meet on Sept 23rd...

Not sure about private sellers, but the two cars we've purchased since moving down here from dealers had 30-day temp tags on them.

FYR, I sold a car last year to someone in Florida. They flew up, picked up the car, slapped some license plate from one of their other cars on it... and drove home. No problems. The car was insured before they came to get it, and they registered it when they got home...

Massachusetts has some weird laws. I talked to my insurance company about how temporary plates work in MA. The lady said if I were to buy a vehicle out of state and put on temp plates to drive it home (from that state), I wouldn't be able to cross the MA border. I guess in MA they don't allow any cars with temp plates. So what she said I would have to do is drive the vehicle up to the Connecticut border and park it there. Then find a ride into MA and get the truck registered, go back to CT, put the MA plates on before crossing the state line.

I live about 40 miles from the CT border, so it's not that bad. Image someone that lives in Maine and needs to go through MA. Legally that person would have to drive around MA or risk the chance of getting pulled over.
