Nissan running ahead of schedule in turnaround strategy

Nissan Motor will introduce a new three-year business plan this spring because company executives say they will shortly have achieved the goals of the first plan. That puts the company about a year ahead of schedule in its turnaround efforts. Under the current revival plan, Nissan has reduced much of its purchasing costs for existing vehicles.

As part of the new plan, CEO Carlos Ghosn is asking Nissan’s suppliers to help cut costs by another 15 percent. The 15-percent cost-cutting target is part of a new business plan dubbed "Nissan 180."

To support projected sales growth, Nissan will introduce12 new models worldwide in fiscal 2002. Nissan will introduce an average of 8 new models annually through 2005.
