I drove a DSG and 6sp. The R feels heavier but more planted. The DSG felt like it was in the power band at a lower RPM. The R gets there around 2800-3000 then its on until 6k. It doesn't push you in your seat but power is there. The manual GTI feels underpowered. In the bends the R holds like a champ. The Rs suspension is a bit stiffer and the steering is so much sharper. The GTI put a smile on my face but R made me gitty like a school girl.
I would have gotten a GTI and been very happy but I couldn't find a shadow blue. After test driving the R I somehow justified the extra 4 grand.

or just go here.

People who make fun of GTI or R stock power numbers need to learn how the turbocharged cars work.

Only options are Nav and Sunroof. It was a little over 38 OTD. That's alot. I plan to get a United Motorsports or maybe APR tune down the road.

$38K!? Holy shit, that's expensive... I mean for what it is. But still, a great looking car! If you are happy with the car, that's all it matters.

Also OP I'd say go APR. Once a year they will have a sale for their ECU upgrade where you get to 3 ECU maps for the price of one or something like that. There's obviously the Regular, the upgraded and they have a valet one which reduced power lol

500 smiles down. Went up to 6k rpms. First gear is really short. Also have the first minor problem. The TMPS light is on. All the pressures are right but it will not reset. Going to take it in this weekend. Trying to fight the urge to make a trip to APR. Stage 1 is only a 2.5 hr trip.

^ Wont the APR void your warranty for the powertrain?

Meh. The warranty is overrated.
Do it! You should have gotten it done earlier.

those pics are so clean!!!
Yea APR does void it, but you can always revert back to stock CPU before you take it to the dealership and they shouldn't know that you have it tuned.
Its definitely a risk.
I say wait till you get bored of the power and you are craving some more.

They were testing this over on the MK6 forum. One of the members is a tech and others provided their VINs, both stock and chipped. IIRC quite a few, if not all, of the chipped cars came back with the message.
I guess the days of using the stock setting is gone.

They've recently started compiling a database of chipped cars. Techs at dealerships are getting a message when they enter certain VINs.

I guess if you're independently wealthy, and have no need for a warranty, if anything goes wrong with the car, then by all means...tune away. But if you need the warranty in tact...

Once you install a tune other than the stock tune, it'll be recorded in the system.

Update
7500 miles Daily Driven. Caught the Mod bug. That really was the going in plan.
First mod was APR's Carbonio Intake.
Then Stage 1 flash at APRs BBQ. What a difference that made. 3K rpm on its a different car.
Went to the strip. Ran a 13.9@99 It's hard as hell to get off the line.
Went back to the track and ran a 13.8@103
Switched out intake to a CTS Turbo .
Added a HPA dogbone mount. Back to the track 13.7@103
Added a 42DD downpipe then issues arose.

Since it was a DIY job I had leaks all over the place. Took it apart, fixed it and re-installed. Leaks gone but more problems came. First clutch slip. I've had it before but it's a known problem with some modified Rs. Haven't decided if I am going to take it to the dealership and a OEM replacement or get an aftermarket stage 2. Second intake issues. I'm in the middle of trying to figure this one out. Took off the CTS intake and put the APR back on. Problem got better but it's still there.
Once all that done. I going to hit the dyno and back to the strip. I'll probably go to a road course this summer. Just picked a helmet and a sony action the cam. I'm probably good on mods for awhile. I may get a fuel pump and stage 2+ tune at the end of the summer. Which will really end up being springs, wheels and tires also.
Overall the car has been great. Solid daily with the added bonus of being a blast in the bends. Really comfortable ride and flys under the radar unless folks know what it is. I've gotten 22mpg and just started getting 23-24 after the downpipe. 28mpgs on the highway. My only one complaint is I want a DSG. The 6MT is fun. 1st and 2nd are really short and after a long days of work I miss having an auto.
There are alot of them on the lots. The prices should going down this summer with deals to be had. The Golf R is great at being a GT hatch that can modded to be a quick sleeper. It's worth a test drive if someone is looking for a new car.
I plan on hitting up Wookies in the Woods next weekend at the Tail of the Dragon. That should be fun.

Thanks for the update. Looks good and clearly performs great on the performance and fuel efficiency fronts.
