New S2000 or used Boxster?

So I have been hot on the trail of a new S2000 and am very near pulling the trigger. But am thinking is a year or two old boxster with low miles a better choice.

Keep in mind for me this will be the 6th car in my fleet and reserved for nice weather and having fun in. I am not so much concerned with speed, I enjoy a fast car but I don't need a 0-60 in 4 second or 1/4 mile time of 13 seconds. I just like a car that is fun to throw into the corners, will turn a few heads and just makes the experience of driving a car more fun. From your experiences, based on what I am looking for in a car(and the fact this board, much like myself, has a bias towards honda's) which would you get.

FWIW- I will probably hold out and get a 2006 S2000 if that is my choice.

I say Boxter only because I loved mine, I can't tell you how many times I regret trading it in for my SUV.

Cept the s2000 usually beats out the boxster in the comparos....but i have extensively driven a boxster before...and they are indeed fun.

either one is good.

Well, I was in the same boat a few weeks ago and am now the owner of a beautiful, 2005 S2000.

IMO, the Boxster is weak, but the Boxster S is another story. Regardless, it seemed like I needed to go back to 2001ish to get a comparably priced Boxster S and a four year old car with a plastic rear window did not compute for me. While, the Boxster S offers heated seats and awesome brakes, I still opted for brand new. Actually, I think the S2000 is very comparable performance wise to the 986 Boxster S.

My $.02. Flame away.

No reason to flame anything you said, I asked people's opinion's. I like both cars a lot and think the S2000 is the reasonible solution, but I may not be looking for the reasonible solution at this point in my life.

I can not justify the prices of the boxster S, maybe in 5 years I'll be singing a different tune, but in the mean time I want to have some fun.

Depends on your preferences and needs. The S2000 lives more on the edge, the Boxster is more liveable day to day. From what you've said, the Boxster might be more to your liking.

Tough call, but I'd go with a used Boxster, an S if possible.

Just something about driving a Porsche... even if it is the poor mans Porsche

Either way you will be happy, I love my s2k.

I remember reading Car & Driver and their comparison of a few convertibles. It rated the S2000 over the boxster for fun factor, price and performance. I would go with a brand new S2000 rather than a used Boxster. Something about a brand new car, Mmmm Mmmm

The S2000 I believe is less likely to be fussy maintanence-wise and should be cheaper to own and operate if that matters at all.

Compare interiors and see which one you like better, and then go drive them both (if you haven't already). The S2000 packs an awesome slick 6spd manual that is hard to beat in terms of feel. I believe it's one of the best in the industry. I haven't driven a Boxster by the way, but I wouldn't be attracted to it unless it was the Boxster S.

Good luck.

A colleague of mine has a '02 boxster - he's enjoyed it, but is bored with it and is going to sell. Also, says that compared to the S2000 that I'm thinking about, if he had to do it all over again - he'd go for the Honda.

Why? Maintenance costs.

I think it depends on what you want. Boxter will definitely be more of a head turner for people you want turning heads (women who want men with money). The S2000 will only turn heads of Honda enthusiasts and kids. But if you want more track like driving fun and you intend to drive fast, then I think S2000 will be more fun. But they warn that you have to keep it revved high to have fun in the S2000. I'm sure Boxter's higher torque will be more fun to drive during normal conditions.

Boxster = :ghey:

S2000 > Boxster

Therefore, S2000 /= :ghey:ness derived from the Boxster

I am not to good at math, perhaps you could try that again in English?

I'm guessing you've never driven either because the only people who say the boxster is :ghey: are people who've never driven them. They are a BLAST to drive, though I've never really had a chance to put one through the paces the way I would if I owned it.

I was just about to say all that. So much bandwagon hate for the boxster from guys who never driven it. I drove one a month ago and fell in love. Not the quickest but man you can toss that thing around!

Never driven the S2k but from what i hear you have to rev it high to make power. Wouldnt that get annoying city driving? Hmm i really need to take one out for a spin.

Tireguy, what is your price range??

I have been toying with the same thought.
I have seen a bunch of 00 - 01 Boxster Ss
for under 30K. The only problem with the
Boxster is the options. There are SO many!!!!

I recently drove a Boxster that a buddy of mine
bought. I fell in LOVE instatnly!!! The handling
with a true mid engine car with RWD is UNREAL!!

I too have considered the S2000. The only thing
I dont like about it, is the NO power under 4K rpm.
I have yet to drive one, so once I do, I can make a
better comparo.

FYI, my buddy bought a 99 Box with 88K on it for
$16.5K.

Well, I would drive the Boxster, if I could close the door to drive one! My knee blocks the fucking door so it won't close all the way. I'm sure they are a blast to drive, from the 40-something women and massive tools I see driving them around, they look like they are having a great time.

I don't like the idea of getting a used car, but that's me. So the one's I've been looking at have under 20k on them- no way you are touching a boxsterS with under 20k on it for under $40k- at least in a good color with any normal options. As for regular boxster's I can get at or around 10k boxster for a similar price to a new S2k, which is where the problem lies. There is a 2001 with decent options and a color combo I could live with very close to me w/13k on it I could get for $25k- that's about $6k off the price of the S2k(out the door), you can do a few improvements to a boxster with 6k(if you felt compelled to do so). But I know if I do it, I'll just save, wait till Feb. and get the BoxsterS and be happy for years to come.

I have driven both and like them both, but can not have them both. I don't live in a city at all, quite the opposite in fact so city driving is of little concern to me.

Great points made by everyone, I appreciate your help so far!

New S2K > used Boxster S
I've driven both cars and I agree with everyone here that the Boxster is a blast in the twisties, then again, so is the S2K, but I can see how this would be a tough choice for anyone, for sure.

(You could always add a Comptech supercharger (= 355hp ) and equal or be just under the cost of a late model Boxster S with a decent list of optional equipment!!!)

Having said that, Porsche quality/reliability has been very good (with the exception of 1st run Cayenne), but I think it's reliability becomes questionable as the years go by. Honda reliability is, for lack of a better term, forever.

Good luck with your decision....

I am not sure where you are looking, but I have found a bunch under 40K. I have
a secret for you Tireguy. Used Boxsters dont sell that fast!!!! I am gonna post
just a few that I have found. I have no idea what you consider a good color combo.
I'll post what I have found. There are some that I have been watching that have
been posted for over 2 months and haven't sold. They dont move that fast. If
you find a motivated seller, you will get one for a STEAL!!! Let me know what
you think!!!

This one is HOT!!

Just a few that I have found. If you are patient, and you look for what
you want, you will find it, and you will get a good deal. If you go on
autotrader, you will see the same cars over and over. They do NOT sell
that fast at all!! GOOD LUCK, and keep us posted!!

Thanks for those links AztecRol! I have seen the first two but not the other's. The first one would be great if it didn't have a grey interior, I am also not feeling a white exterior on the second one. Maybe I should change the poll to say used boxsterS I will keep my eyes open, I think I am going to drive the S2k again this weekend, I haven't driven one in about 6 months so I'll see just how much fun it really is again.

A new car is a afterall a new car, i would agree with the majority here, go with the S2000, and as EMU and Beet said you wouldn't be disappointed.

I'd take the used Boxster, easily. The S2000 is nice, but it's not a Porsche.

I don't know, I just like the styling of the Boxster (and most other Porsches that I've seen). The S2000 looks a bit generic in comparison. That's just my opinion of course. (I'm 32 if that matters.)

I haven't driven the Boxster, but have driven the S2000. I say just drive both and see how you like 'em. Personally, I'd get the S2K but I'm sure the Boxster is no bitch.

Important - The S2k is timeless. The Boxster is getting dumped for the Cayman. Your pick.

I love Porsche. Boxsters are at the bottom of the list, obviously, but I'm still a huge fan.

I think a few of Jay Leno's articles got me into them.

Which might be a good thing in this instance, the s2k beats the boxster in most comparisons.
