New license plates in New York, opinions?

Lots of NY plates are already printed and not stamped (the special plates for sports teams, different regions of the state, professions, etc.). The plates are covered with a very thick coat of clear-coat enamel and the painted surface is reflective, so trying to alter them is very difficult and easily detected by the police.

Rodney nailed it. Follow the money. Every time they change the plates (produced by prisoners who are paid next to nothing for their labor), they get to charge vehicle owners mucho bucks for the new ones.

The old one looks much, much better. Those new ones are horrific.
And +1 for hating the printed plates, they look fake as hell.
I refuse to get Texas license plates since the new ones are printed (and TX requires a front license plate. Not going to massacre my beautiful front bumper
). FL for life!

Whenever I'm required to get new ones, I'm going to order the "vanity" plain white stamped Texas plate.

Please tell me that's a joke. It's totally hideous! ![what](https://acurazine.com/forums/images/smilies/what.gif)
I just moved to NY from NJ. Want to keep my Jersey plates forever now.....
I'm going to cry the day I have to put that on my car. It looks awful.
I rather like my NJ Olympic plates.

They complain about not having money in the state but it makes sense for them to redesign a plate that there was nothing wrong with.. ![Roll Eyes](https://acurazine.com/forums/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif)
Not to mention the cost of what it is to register for the first time or renew your registration these days, it's getting outrageous...

NJ is $46.50 to renew registration, plus an extra $10 so $56.50 for my Olympic plates.

How much is it for first time? I'm still debating changing my address officially from NJ to NY (for tax reasons, I still work in NJ and don't want to pay extra taxes). I can still register on Wednesday and get the old plates. ![Chuckle](https://acurazine.com/forums/images/smilies/chuckle.gif)

I just renewed the reg on my wife's car, granted I have personalized plates (IIRC $45 extra every two years), but the 2 year renewal cost me $280.

So it seems like the only cost would be to the state since they have to change their process each time they change the plates...

If they wanted to SAVE money just stop requiring us to have plates on the front of the car. Cuts cost and labor in half.

If you were in NY in the last 20 years... you paid for the new plate whether you realized it or not. They roll it into your new registration price. This is a joke for New York to generate money.

Same with down here in NC. We got new plates, but the registration fees never changed. I've paid the same amount on every car we've registered since we've been here...

it's a car-drive it
I never paid an increased registration fee. Every car I ever owned/titled in NY I paid the same registration fee each time. Very rarely did the DMV fees change unless you were buying a personalized/vanity plate. But regular registration was the same on all cars I ever titled ![Dunno](https://acurazine.com/forums/images/smilies/dunno.gif)

Right. But either way our registration fees never changed each time they updated it. We have some blue plates and some red plates... but to register the car cost the same each time. I never paid an increase when they made any changes. Even the personalized/vanity plates pricing stayed the same.

Maybe I missed this:
Officials are saying that they are replacing the plates, because the current ones are fading or hard to read. Yet, I haven't heard them say anything about all of the people who own special plates (i.e. yankees, mets, etc.) being required to replace their existing plates with new ones.
