This new coyote engine is pretty great. Motor Trend recently did a video road test and a dyno on the car and factored what they suspect - something Chevy was famous for in the mid 60's... underrating the engine output. Motor Trend's factored numbers were 435HP and 404 lb/ft of torque with a 0-60 run of 4.3 seconds and a quarter mile of 12.9 seconds at 110.(4 or 7??). This on street tires. Mount slicks and use someone who knows how to make it down the quarter mile and watch those times drop significantly.
I am also hot for this car and if I was in the market, this new Mustang with the new V8 engine would be pretty much on top of the heap. I just wish they'd get away from using the 5.0 liter designation and return to cubic inches.

I know. It's going to be a great car.
Went to see my dealer last week, and while it's not currently in the system, he expects it to be in very soon.
SB:
Think so? I've always liked the 5.0 designation than 302. Edmunds performed a dyno run as well.

Oh yeah, that makes me hard. There's never been so much car for so little that I wanted so much. That thing calls to my most animal desires. ahhhhhhhhhhh if I don't get one in the next couple of years I'm going to go crazy.

Well that is definitely a personal preference. That generation spanned from 1979 to 1993. The 80's models definitely look a bit dated by today's standards. But I think the 1990 - 1993 ones looked pretty muscular and aggressive compared to contemporaries.

The Mustang nameplate is indeed a legend. A car that manages to appeal to just about everyone. From commuters choosing efficient powertrains to hardcore performance guys (and gals) lusting over FE big blocks. From secretaries to white collar professionals. It continues to do so. If that isn't an automotive icon or legend, I don't what is.

What do you mean "3rd Gen 5.0"? The five litre has never been used by Ford to identify generations previous to the Fox platform. And I think most would argue that the Fox platform was the biggest mistake by Ford. It served them well for close to fifteen years, and although dated towards the end, it continued to evolve. And personally, I think a notchback five litre Fox is one of the most attractive cars made during that era.

I did do some mods and hated to part with it six years later. At the time, it was the best bang for the buck going.

I ordered an '88 Mustang LX 302CID in October '87 and took delivery 13 weeks, 3 days later on January 19, 1988. One of the best cars and most reliable I ever owned. Rock solid and a sheer blast to drive.

Yeah, great cars. I built an '89 and later on a '91. Usually stuff. Underdrives, headers, little head work, exhaust, gears, and intake. A lot of fun for the money.

Steve Collingsworth did a series with an '87 LX 302 where he would make a few mods then report the results. He started off from scratch and did the quarter in box stock condition with the "standard' 2.73 gears (I had ordered the lowest then available for mine - 3.08's). When he had done essentially the same things I had done, he turned a 13.7 at 104 MPH. I had removed the air silencer, installed 2-chamber FlowMasters, a pulley reduction kit, 3.55's out back, a Hyper-Tech chip (which I removed and came up with something of my own that worked better), JBA shorty headers (which made no difference over the stock headers), K&N filter... I think that was it.

it was nothing specifically aimed at the 5.0 itself.. but the 79-93 mustangs are what i was calling the abomination.
although the 5.0 was a badass car performance-wise.. it was in a turd of a shell...

That was uncalled for...
After driving my Mustang now for a few weeks, I can whole heartidly say, people REALLY like Mustangs... Every time I stop for gas without fail somebody will say they had one, or know somebody with one, then they usually go on to offer a price thinking it's for sale
Rockstar21, you can call it an abomonation all you like but until you've owned and driven one for a short period of time you simply won't understand what the car's really about.
And yes, that commercial is fantastic; CGI and all

I agree the Fox platform Mustangs were cheap looking, horrible cars in comparison to the asian offerings of the time. What they had going for them was a stout engine and RWD. To this day I would easily take a 140hp Prelude Si circa 1990 over a 200+hp Mustang of the same year.....

and have driven various models... (test drive, friends cars)
i dont need to own one of the 79-93 models to know i dont like them. its a visual thing, has nothing to do with the car's reliability or performance.. i simply hate those particular ones...
is this an issue? geez lol

I agree the mustang is great on paper and the styling isn't bad but I still wouldn't buy one. Part of it is that I don't really like american cars and part of it being that I don't like the general idea of having a mustang. Maybe it is because I'm being ignorant and don't like the name but it is a common thing IMO, just like Hyundai and the Genesis

sounds like your referring to mustangs in general... this is not the case.. i in fact love mustangs of old and new. my favorite being mid-late 60's with the current generation in a close 2nd.

I'm looking forward to production reviews on the new Stang. I love everything about it so far except for the black rocker panels. I know they started doing that a year or so ago, just not a fan of it. To me it makes the car look unfinished. I'd definitely paint them body color if I ever bought one.

but as far as people i've had the conversation with, it was across the board hatred for that body style.
of course, i was growing up in a time when the box-looking cars were being phased out and cars started to have curves again, could be a major part of my hatred towards them
i just think most cars from that era all look like they welded together pieces of straight sheet metal.. honda did it, ford did it.. hell it was the "IN" thing.. im just not a fan of the 80's and early 90's vehicles in general... mustang isnt the prejudice here...
