Like others have mentioned, no car payment > new car smell.
My mom won't let go of her 1997 Dodge Intrepid with 72k miles. She bought it new and loves it to death. My dad has offered to buy her a new car but she refuses. Just drive it until it dies...get your moneys worth

It is almost two years since I asked this question and my wife is still content with her 1998 Integra. I should probably leave well enough alone, but I have to ask - Is there anything new out there that might be interesting to her? After all, it now has 70K miles on it (without any problems).
It was fun to reread this thread and I am reminded how helpful the forum was last time.
We checked out every suggested car and recently we looked at the Hyundai Genesis Coupe. Very nice, but not good enough to replace the Integra. Perhaps the long-awaited Subuaru/Toyota F86 will fill the bill (when and if it ever arrives).
Thanks,
Ranger

Are you guys just bored and sitting on excess cash?
Smart money buys what they want, take care of it and keep it as long as it suits their needs. On this car site, people are saying either keep it or sell it to them!
I have a 1993 Honda with 135K since I purchased it new. Though no longer a DD, I would take it anywhere. Having cash, a fun reliable car and no carnote = PRICELESS. Keep the Teg. If you really want her to experience something new, how about a 30 day rental?

We do try to buy things that make sense, take care of them, and keep them a long time. We aim for 10 years with cars.
'69 mustang - 20 years (16 with us, 4 with son)
'83 RX7 - 15 years
'87 Taurus - 9 years
'97 CL - 9 years
'98 Integra - still own and enjoy
'00 Ranger - still own and use (enjoy would be too strong)
'06 Tl - still own and enjoy
Not sure about the response pertaining to the Genesis Coupe. We really liked it, but it is not a hatchback and you can't get leather in the 4-cylinder model. Also, the dealer turned us off by thinking he deserved a markup of $1200.
Again, thanks for the comments,
Ranger

We do not go by years- we use miles since we drive a lot
we also checked out the genesis coupe-turbo 6MT-not impressed-too noisy and not enough power. They wanted list price-no extra-

Three Wheelin'
I haven't read every thread, so this may have already been suggested...have you thought about adding new wheels and maybe adding in-dash navigation to your Teg? Perhaps a little 'freshening/updating will help cure the "same-'ol" feeling towards the car...
Otherwise, drive it into the ground and enjoy every trouble-free minute of it...

I should mention that we also have a 2000 Four Winns runabout, also in excellent condition, with only 240 hours on it. We keep in the garage with the Ranger.

Somehow, I blocked from my mind the '78 Pinto wagon that I bought. Fortunately, my son did me a favor and totaled it in '86. Actually, he was stopped and someone hit him but he wasn't hurt. The lesson learned is to do your homework before making a buying decision.

Audi A3 or Volvo C30?
Both cars can have pretty nice interiors if optioned up properly-- something that is a pain compared to Acuras.
Both the A3 and C30 should be a little quieter than the Integra-- the A3 is based on the A4 chassis, and the C30 is based on the S40.
The manual transmission on the A3 is pretty nice if it's like the A4 I tested; I didn't try any auto Audis. The C30 was OK-- not quite as slick as the Audi stick.
The hatch opening on the C30 is really small compared to those on the Integras, but the glass is lower and easier to lift.

New car for wife
I started this thread in Feb 2008 and updated it in Feb 2010. Finally, my wife has found something to replace her 1998 Integra. As nice as it is, she would really would rather have a 2011 Integra, if there were such a thing. There are some things that the Integra does better than this Z - like gas mileage, low property tax and insurance, steath... What the heck - life is short!
Just for comparison; here is a picture of our first new car:
The Integra is too nice to part with so we are keeping it in the family and giving it to our son - sorry, it's not for sale.
Thanks for your suggestions; we considered them all.

Very nice! I like the Mustang too.... and I guess your house is nice as well
ok, ok.... moving on, nice choice on the 370Z. The new 7-speed automatic seems great, and I'm sure you guys will have fun with it. It's quite the machine. I respect that you guys can keep cars for so long and in such great condition - I'm sure the Nissan will be no exception. An even bigger testament is that you two have remained married for so long - a very exclusive club

Congrats on the new car! Nice pick, and glad to see the Integra is staying in the family. Your son is a lucky man to have a lot of your hand-me-down cars.
Love the throwback picture, as well!

I don't think I have ever seen a thread with so many pleasant comments. Yes, I am a lucky one - my wife has tolerated me for 46+ years.
BTW - The Mustang is a '69 GT even though it strongly resembles the new one. We kept that one in the family for 20 years!
Two minor corrections; we are in South Carolina, not Tennessee (which, all jokes aside, is really a beautiful state with nice people), and my wife would not consider an automatic transmission.
Thank you all.

It's been more than three years since I posted to this thread and don't know if any of the original responders are still around but here is an update:
My wife has put about 23K miles on the 370Z and loves it. So far the only thing it's needed are tires (it ate the originals in 20K even with gentle driving). Downside is that she can only squeeze about 25 mpg out of it.
My son is still happy with the '98 Integra. It now has 130K miles on it and he has had only the brakes replaced. His family prefers it for long trips even though they have a 2008 Mitsubishi.
