There really haven't been any accurate photoshop pics of it out, according to Bangle, the designer. But it should be built on the 5 series platform (I believe) and will be available with the same motors as the 5 series. I would geuss, the 4.4L V-8 with 333 hp and probably the next top end I-6, maybe a 3.0L Valvetronic with 265hp. Hopefully there will be a Motorsports edition. Speculation is that the next M5 will have a 500-550hp F1 derived V-10 with a 9000rpm redline. The M6 would likey share it. I would also guess that the SMG will be offered on it, as it now even offered on the 325 and 330 in Euorpe.
BMW, please build it!!

I guess I need to direct img to web not my HD
I read a couple of things about the engine. Some say it is going to get the 4.4 that X5 has or the v-8 that z-8, M5 has or the following is the most interestig thing that I heard, it kinda makes sense since torque is more important for the feel of acceleration than hp..
"(Z9) Peak torque is a staggering 413 lb ft (560 Nm), which is maintained constantly between 1750 and 2500 rpm to give outstanding performance even at this low end of the rev range. Maximum power is an impressive 245 bhp. Choosing a diesel engine to power a large sports coupé is a reflection of BMW's confidence in the refinement and performance characteristics of this ground-breaking unit."

Featured in this article: BMW 2002 6-series and 2003 2-series
The 2002 BMW 6-series
The 6 will cost little more than half the price of its competitors, the Ferrari 456 and Maserati 3200 GT. However, it will be just as desirable.
The new 6-series, based on the 5-series' chassis, will have agile handling coupled with a quiet ride. The new Bimmer might be driven by huge 18" wheels, though a change could shrink them to 17'' or even 16". However it comes to the market, the 6-series will be an affordable alternative to the deceased 8-series and will come with a variety of engines. In North America, BMW will offer the 644Ci, with a 282hp 4.4 liter V-8, a mid-priced 350hp 644 CSi, with a modified 4.4 liter V-8, and finally, an M6, with a 400hp 5.0 liter V-8. However, don't hold your breath, for the M6 will join the rest of the 6-series line up two or three years after the series' introduction. A less expensive 6-cylinder is also likely, providing around 225hp. No displacement figures are available.
The 6's technology won't stop under the hood. Most secondary controls, such as CD, car-phone, GPS, and A/C adjustments will be voice-activated. Safety will also be stressed, with variable-intensity tail lights, brightening and dimming as the brake pedal is pressed and depressed. The weight of the 6 will be reduced with the use of a much more rigid aluminum-and-steel shell structure. Look for a price around $55K.
FEATURES
Vehicle type: front engine, rear-wheel drive, 4 passenger 2-door coupe
Engine types: 225hp I6*, 350hp and 282hp 4.4-liter V-8, and 400hp 5.0-liter V-8
Transmission: 5-speed manual, 5-speed steptronic automatic
Price Range: $55,000*

The 2003 BMW 2-series
It was an automotive legend. A sophisticated and ultimate driving machine. Oh and yes, it was groovy, too. Now it's coming back, at least in spirit.
The car will be sold as either a 3-door or 5-door hatchback. The former could weigh as little as 2300 pounds and provide exhilarating acceleration figures. The 216 will come with a-you guessed it!-1.6-liter engine, producing 102hp. The 214 with a 1.4-liter engine, making 80hp, will come about a year after the series' introduction. The most expensive 2 will be offered with a 2.3 liter six-cylinder drivetrain delivering about 170hp to the rear wheels. And if the car comes with the rumored weight, it should blow its competitors away. Remember a little achievement of perfection called the Lotus Elise? With the recent introduction of the all-wheel drive 3-series, an Xti badge could also appear on the 2-series.
Safety was a strong issue throughout the development of this vehicle. The new 2 will feature ABS, air bags protecting the front, side, and head. An electronic stability system similar to the ones now used on the Chevrolet Corvette, Mercedes CL-class, and Porsche 911 will be optional. What differs this system from others is that it provides the driver with more freedom, and isn't that what a BMW driver is looking for?
The most controversial part of this vehicle will be its price. BMW executives are split on the issue. On one hand, $20,000 would be a fitting price, placing the 2-series in the same class with the Volkswagen Golf, a long time favorite of hatchback enthusiasts. This would likely boost BMW's sales and open up the brand to a new spectrum of buyers; a change that needs to happen if BMW wants to stay independent. However, such an affordable vehicle could undermine the brand's reputation for producing exclusive, high-quality vehicles. All we can do is wait, but at least we know that this car is definitely on the way.

Seems more likely to receive a 6-speed manual and 6-speed auto/steptronic than the 5-speed transmissions mentioned in the caraddict story (http://www.caraddict.net/ab2.html)

I'm way up there, kinda near Lake Placid and the Northern adirondacks. Its a pretty good ways from you down in Albany. Yeah it sucks, it snows ALL THE TIME. Because I am so close, I also spend a good amount of time in Montreal, where it snows less.
