New BMW 5 Series (Pics)

Chassis made of aluminum just like the Z8, similar suspension from the new 7 series, same electric brakes from the 7, a 6 speed manual added to the quick shifting auto trannys, etc.

All engines will use Valvetronic technology, plus use of the iDrive system from the 7 as well.

For now, rumors say that the M5 will wear a 5 liter V8 just like now, but I am sure it will make more power to go against the E-55 AMG

So from the rear it looks more like the current 3 series. I wonder why? Otherwise it looks much better than the 7 and I hope the use of aluminum will actually help the car's weight as it was getting really heavy lately. Let's see.

It looks small...

And is that a NAV there in under that cavity.. or just the idrive..

I am sure the M5 would kick ass big time,... the only real BMW worth the money.. I wished it would only cost some $50,000 or less... I can't pay some $70,000+ for a car.

And have you notcied that 2 small nipples that you can squeeze...

Looks better than the new 7, but I dont think its looks better than the current 5. Kinda reminds me of the g35. It still looks pretty good and it could be something that I can get used to, but as of right now I still like the current 540.
As far as the interior, it looks too messy, so maybe its not a final version, Id wait until they are released. BMW's interiors are usually very clean.

P.S. Whats with that 3rd picture, isnt that just the previous generation 7?

Nice car!

I like the Audi RS6 that you posted yesterday better. The @ss on that car doesn't look too good to me. I kinda like the older @ss better. Still it's a nice car.

It looks like they found a MUCH better way of mounting the OnStar antenna on the roof then Acura did.

No word on an SMG, but something tells me that the M5 would get it. It just makes perfect sense.

Actually I am not sure if that car is the 7 or the 5. I should take it out.

From Auto-Bild, info on the 3,6, and 5.

The 5 should get the same engines as the 6...

1- The next 6 will get the following engines and transmissions
Engines

630 Ci - 3.0 Liter - I6 - 231 hp
635 Ci - 3.6 Liter - V8 - 272 hp
645 Ci - 4.4 Liter - V8 - 333 hp
M6 - 5.5 Liter - V10 - 500 hp , 700Nm

Transmissions

6-Speed manual - (on 6 and 10 cylinder)
6-Speed automatic with SMG function (not on M6)
Sequential 6-Speed - SMG III (exclusively for M6)

2- Not acknowledged yet, but AWD will only be available on theX3 and X5. No AWD on the next gen. 3-Series.

3- The next gen 6-cylinders will get Valvetronic.

4- The M5 Touring is coming on the next 5. (5.5 Liter 500hp) But no word on the transmission yet.

5- BMW is working on direct fuel injection, which will be a step towards EVT (Elektronikventiltrieb) - electronic controlled valve, which will replace the cam shaft, where each single valve will be electronically controlled. (EVT may come on the next 3-Series)

Extremely interesting post!

Here are my comments:

1. The V10 for the M6 and M5 were rumored like 5 months ago but then the rumors called for a 5 liter V8. I wonder if the V10 will actually be the way to go. I hope so.

2. No AWD on the next 3 series? So no more 330xi option?

3. The HP numbers on the engines sounds like power in PS not BHP. Cos the 225BHP 3 liter engine today in the 330i is rated at 231PS in Europe. Is that what the mag means?

4. Sequential 6-Speed - SMG III (exclusively for M6) WOW! What is this? Does anyone know what this tranny is all about?

5. Lastly, the EVT specs are encouraging. I thought the idea about electro-hydraulic valves was abandoned. I wonder when will this technology be out. Sounds like we might be 2 years away from this. I wish.... Guys, this technology will make engines spin to 10,000 rpm no problem. A lot more power from this technology. We will see 2 liter engines make 300 HP with no forced feeding. I am crossing my fingers.

1. I think the V-10 has a higher chance of being released for the ///Motorsport models because Mercedes has released the blown V8 for the SL 55. Although, the ///M engineers have said that they have not come close to explointing the output of the current 5L V-8. BMW wants to keep up with MB and a 5.5L V-10 would have NO problem upstaging the blown V-8. Redline would be at least 9K, assuming it is a up-displacement F1 engine (I believe they are 3.5L).

2. That is what it said

3. I believe that it is 231 DIN horespower. I would like to see the I-6 get the Valvetronic technology. It already has the DBW throttle. That may step on the 3.6L V-8's toes in Europe though

4. SMG III will be on the M5 and M6. We have already seen 2 gererations of the SMG system, the first on the EVO E36 M3 and now on the E46 M3. The next would be a new transmission to accomadate added power and hopefully refine the automatic mode. No specs yet.

5. EVT would be If anyone can build it, BMW can.

BTW, have you seen the Z5? 2000lbs! Carbon fiber and kelvar composite

Interesting.

A few things:

F1 engines are 3 liters in displacement and yes I also heard that the V10 would be a larger F1 V10 engine. 9K rpm is a sure thing.

ABout the EVT, I believe that it is not BMW that is closer to this. I believe Siemens is the manufacturer. Maybe BMW will be buying from Siemens.

About the Z5, yes. I have. Looks like a 2.2 liter 4 cyl would make that thing go as fast as the Elise...hehehe
