I still have a loan out for a car, so I don't have the title. What's the process for doing a private sell? What does the DMV need from me, etc?

 

Go with the buyer to a bank. He hands you a cashiers check, you fill out bill of sale. Deposit the check, you both sign bill of sale (have it notarized if possible). There are also 'release of liability' forms in some states, in AZ you can download them from DMV website. Hand him the keys, he now owns the car. You now pay off your loan, and have the title mailed to you. When you get it, sign over the title to the new owner. Or you can have title mailed directly to new owner, depending on the lien holder. In the meanwhile he can get a temporary plate from the DMV.

 

where do i get a copy of the "bill of sale"?
