Needs your inputs!! '94 Honda Prelude Si
Year: 1994
Model: Prelude Si
Color: White
Trans: Auto
Miles: 221,000
Engine: H23
Price: $2900 but probably negotiable
I'm thinking of buying it as a daily. Interior and exterior of this car is in great condition but downsides are high mileage and auto transmission. I know Hondas are very reliable but its questionable at 220k. Also any tranny problems associated with the preludes? MPG in city/highway? Any immediate serivces that needs to be done? Reasonable price for this car? Any of your inputs will be very helpful.

Price seems a little high for 220k miles. $2000 seems more acceptable considering the maintanence you'll have to do to keep it running as a DD. I haven't ever heard of any issues with the auto in the Preludes, but with that kind of mileage you shouldn't consider a failing tranny a surprise.
Sorry but an automatic with that many miles? I guess if you're the dice rolling type, then go for it.... but I don't care what kind of car it is. I'd only get a car with that many miles if I were planning to use it almost as a roller that I could drive home.... after which I'd drop in a whole new drivetrain, or at least a new engine.
I can guarantee you this much.... it will probably eat oil, maybe a quart every 2 or 3 months, so keep your eye on it. H-series motors burn oil and a higher mileage one will probably have a greater tendency to do so.

$2000 would probably be worth it.... the tranny swap shouldn't be that hard or different from any other Honda auto-to-manual swap if you know what you're doing. As long as you use a H-series tranny. I'd make sure with people on you-know-what-tech.com

h22 will be lovely if they are below 200k. so 2000 will be a okay deal?

h22s last just as long as any other honda engine. they just need constant oil changes due to the FRM cylinders. and timing belt thas to be properly done.
it looks really mint in the ad, but not 3000 mint. you want a good deal, not an okay deal.

no.. its lowered to 2500.
took a test drive, and for 220k engine, it runs really strong.
new battery, alternator, starter, etc... one owner. been serviced at local import shop that i regularly go for past 10 years.
just need some detail, and new rad cap for now until engine blows up or tranny breaks down.
nothing. just want a beater that i can play around with cheapo parts
h22 & 5spd manual swap guessstimated around 3k..
I'm helping friend find a beater and I came upon this:

Is it me or is the price too good to be true? Would you buy it? Thoughts & opinions please...

Thanks Ken, are the earlier automatics anymore reliable?
I'm basically looking at anything reliable + auto + good mpg + under 4k. Am I right to talk her out of getting a '94 Jetta?

It looks like it's great condition, $3900 is fair IMO
as for the 94 Prelude, I'd keep looking for a cheaper manual. After all, it's a beater, you don't want to spend too much money on it and it doesn't really need to be in great condition.
