Need some help on this A4

Ok so I am going to school in NY and buying another car since my tsx is basically show only and would get stolen where I am at in Rochester, NY. So I am looking at getting an A4 with quarttro for use up there. I found this one and it is local to me like 10 min.

Here is the info that I got off another forum. I am waiting for the vin number from the guy.

Its a 98 Audi A4, black w/ black leather, 5spd. 2.8L 30valve, awd. upgraded front upper and lower control arms, 1.5" drop, aftermarket bumper, New all terrain tires, Remus muffler, Intake, Upgraded chip. over 1,000$ stereo. heated seats. 98,349 miles........asking 8 grand.

I am thinking of offering 7k to 7500 for it. I am wondering what your thoughts are on this.

I have had many friends with Audi's, both the newer and older body style. Just be careful, 2 out of the 4 older body style A4's needed a new engine rebulit at around 110,000 and that was without any mods. Its a great car, good in the snow, just make sure its mechicnically sound.

Really? Never heard about that and if the stat is truly 2 out of 4, you would think it would of been a big recall.

I believe my friend with a 2001 A4 hasn't had any major problems.

I would check audizine or audiworld. com and ask their opinion. That's what I did when I was looking at an A6 2.7T and after listening to them didn't buy it.

Might the engines that needed to be rebuilt the 1.8t? I have a friend with 100k+ miles on his 2.8 and its running fine (save for the fact that the power steering is slowly dying)

I wouldnt get an audi, if you can only afford something less than $15k.

Get yourself an older accord or something that is more practical, when you factor in repair costs as well as reliability. I know the audi is nice, but a 98 A4, your just asking for problems in my book.

you cant get a 2002 for under 10k atleast from around where I am so that is really the 2 requirements.

1. AWD
2. Under 10k

Wait, where in Rochester are you?! I went to RIT so I lived between Henrietta/Brighton and never once felt like I could get my car stolen.
Unless you live over by the downtown area where the street signs are in Spanish

Ok well there have been 4 car thefts on campus this year so far.

Did you invest over 10k in mods to the car you had there.

Did you car look like this.

I am not saying it definitly would but since the 4 cars that were stolen already were bone stock I just dont feel safe taking my car up there since it is my main hobby and I show the car too.

Tint your windows, get an alarm, and get winter wheels. Dude it's a TSX not a 'Benz.

There's no reason for a 19 year old to have 2 cars.

Dont be jealous steve!

But really, why does someone need a car like an audi at college? Its gonna get fucked with either way. Just buy a civic or accord so you dont have to worry about it.

flame me all you want its cool I get it a lot. I came here for advice on the a4 I was looking at some of you gave some and some others just made useless comments. I however have been here long enough to know to expect that. You dont like the car or JDM modding that ok its cool I get it all the time from people. No shit its not a benz but people do steal modded cars maybe your just to sheltered to know that. Make fun of me for being sponsored by valvoline too if you want but I bet you wouldnt turn down free things if you were offered it. Thank you for all of you that were help full and that were not

Nice ride!
I had a 92 Camry in college (98-01) because I knew 1) it would probably get fucked up while on campus 2) it was cheap and reliable to run and 3) putting money in a car while in college was not the smartest way to spend money, considering I would have several thousand dollars of student loans to pay off when I got out.
Of course you're clearly in a different situation.

Regardless, like someone else said, I'd avoid an out of warranty A4... but that's just me. I know 2 ppl A4s at work (both '04 1.8T quattro, maybe previous gen was more reliable?). They plan to sell them as soon as the warranty runs out based on all the problems they've had.

Why do you need AWD? Your FWD TSX gets good gas mileage and will be great in the snow.

A factory body kit, a PS2, some 17" Volks, and a few JDM parts make it a show car?

Oh an Valvoline SynPower hands out 'sponsorships' like candy on Halloween.

So...you dont want to take your "show" car to college in fear of it getting stolen...so instead you want to get an actuall luxury car to take instead...because the chances of its theft are so much less?

19 year olds.....thank god my parents raised me with sense of realism.

I would have taken the ~$27K plus the $10K and bought a nicer car.

Love the TSX though

I know plenty of cars that park on the streets of boston worth 2 times what your car is, mods inluded. Cars get stolen big whoop. There have been 2 shootings on a train station near my campus in Boston, you don't see me running buying a bullet proof vest.

Like steve said, tint the windows, get a decent alarm and use a set of winter wheels and your car won't look like anyting special.

Only if some dumbass uses the wrong oil and runs it for too long. 99% of Audi engine problems are sludge related and are caused by idiots who use dino and run it for 10K. If you use the correct oil (VW 502.00, i.e. Mobil 1 0w-40 or Synpower 5w-40), and change it every 10K, there shouldn't be any problems.

If you buy a used one, make sure you run some Auto-RX thru it to make sure its sludge free...don't buy one that has previously been run on conventional oil.
