Is my co-worker a moron or am I the moron?
My co-worker was talking big about buying a Lexus GS... to keep the conversation, I asked him to look into the new RL too and he started talking about which is faster.. blah blah
kenji4861: I dunno man.. I guess u just gotta test drive
shinwa####: VTEC V6 is equivalent in displacement to V8
kenji4861: ?!
shinwa####: 3.0+ L
shinwa####: 3.5 L i think
kenji4861: http://auto.howstuffworks.com/question229.htm
kenji4861: sorry just wanted to clear with you
kenji4861: VTEC V6 does not equal V8
shinwa####: lol...busted me..i was juss phucking w/u
shinwa####: so...this doesn't tell me about displacement ratios
shinwa####: just values
shinwa####: i can still be correct...
shinwa####: displacements are nearly the same in vtec v6 vs. v8
shinwa####: http://auto.howstuffworks.com/engine6.htm
shinwa####: 1 L == 1,000 cc
shinwa####: don't phuck with an electrical engineering major..we know about electrical & mechanical systems
shinwa####: alright nigga...getting tired....getting too old for this shit

I must admit, I don't know what he's talking about with displacements n all, but he's wrong on many topics. I know he will bring this up in front of other co-workers when I come in. What can I say to make him STFU. Tell me if he's wrong or if I got owned.

When you say faster, are you asking what is going to accelerate the fastest? Just wait for the car review magazines to post some preliminary times. The RL is a 3.5 Liter V6 with 300hp @6200 and a torque of 260 @5000. It has All Wheel Drive and a 5-speed automatic transmission with Sequential Sportshift Paddle Shifters.
Gear Ratio(:1)
1st 2.70
2nd 1.57
3rd 1.07
4th 0.69
5th 0.48
Reverse 1.89
Secondary Reduction 1.24
Final Drive 4.60
Maximum Torque Distribution Range (Front:Rear)
70:30 to 30:70
It has a curb weight of 3984 lbs and a weight distribution of 58/42
What does this all mean to me? I have no idea. I'm taking it from a brochure I picked up after test driving the TL. I'll say this; with AWD, it may be a slightly heavier car, but those wheels aren't going to be spinning as much on a take off and the paddle shifters make it easier to shift with both hands on the wheel. Speaking with the guy who took me out on the test drive, he says some competition for the RL may be the Lexus GS300 or the Audia S4. Comparisions though never compare exactly how you want it. The RL was designed as a high end luxury vehicle with performance. When looking at cars in that class, you just don't look at the category of speed.
Edit: Additionally, his mentioning of being an electrical engineering major isn't going to really help him in winning an argument of which car is faster. Depending on what year he is, he may know how to calculate a Fourier series for a circuit, put together some logic gates and know physics; especially the basic principles of electricity and magnetism. That however doesn't make him an expert on combustion engines, which falls more into the realm of mechanical engineering. He might be able to describe the power system of a car and the voltages/resistances over the electrical systems, but he's not going to be able to look at two cars and arbitrary say which one is faster without knowing more about the cars.

When he's talking about displacement, he might be talking about the stroke of a piston, ie: the K24 has a stroke of 99mm, and combined to an 87mm will displace roughly 2,4 litres of air and fuel for every engine rotation.
But if you take it that way, there's not many engines who have such a long stroke as the K24, so you could say that, by comparison, the 4 cyl K24 has a higher displacement than the 3.6 Litres of a 360 Modena for example. Just that the Modena has 4 additionnal cylinders, so the total displacement will be higher.
Now if he compares total displacement to total displacement, ie: J35 (V6, 3.5L) vs 360 Modena (V8, 3.6L), yes the size of the displacement is similar, but it it's nature these two engines simply don't compare further. One is high strung with relatively low torque (Modena), while the other is a relatively long-stroke, high-torque engine. That is not considering the balancing of the engines, etc.
And BTW, whether an engine is VTEC or not doesn't change anything about it's displacement. All a VTEC system does is vary the lift and duration of the valves via the camshafts.
Clearly, the guy is clueless...

I'm sure out Lexus guru, sick, will chime in here shortly but my take is this Other than perhaps 2005 MY (new RL vs. old GS), every other MY of Lexus GS430 RL of same MY and that includes past and future. GS300 is another story however.

uh the RL is 3.5L, the GS430 is a 4.3L V8.
so,
parameter displacementRL 6'd35 ;
parameter displacementGS 6'd43 ;
reg moron ;
begin
if (displacementRL == displacementGS)
begin
moron <= 1'b0 ;
end
else
begin
moron <= 1'b1 ;
end

1'b1 : $display ("You are the moron") ;

Thanks for the insults and tips guys. As expected, soon as the guy comes in, he starts talking smack on how I tried to debate with him. I just told him I never tried to debate, please leave me alone. My co-worker that actually knows stuff came in and made him shut up in 10 seconds.
