My Bel 980 is whacked out.. what to do.

It keeps throwing a code

? LO3 CAL
then
?markers

I called their Tech support and was told they would refurbish it for $80. Just thought I would throw it out to you guys and see what you all say. Should I cut my losses for a better radar (yes a Valentines is friggin $400)... I do not have the manual but the Techie said there was no way to reset it. Is that right?

This Bel 980 has been good. I am just not up with what is out there now.

if you think its doing a decent job then id say just get it refurb'd or whatever needs to be done. does it have laser protection? pop protection? (no one really uses pop though, its new). those are the only two real "new" things offered on radar detectors, and they arent even that new

valentine1 and escort 8500/8500 X50 are both baller and will get the job done for sure. 8500/x50 is cheaper than the valentine. look at it this way, they will both detect well (escort better at k/ka and v1 better at laser, from my experiences), but you pay an extra 100 for arrows... its all personal preference when it comes to if you want to know exactly where the signal is or not. cannot go wrong with either though

if your bel does all that adequately though then id say keep it and fix it... im not too familiar with a lot of bel's though. but if you do a ton of highway driving (especially through diff states and run into state troopers a lot, id say switch). mine saves me time and time again on my trips to and from school on breaks. hope that helps some

My bel does that shit too...and I have the RX65, I just turn it off, and turn it back on...still works the same. I'll send it in for calibration when I get a ticket.

Moonie.

checked out your suggestion (Escort vs Valentines) and with some quick research, bought the Escort (blue display) from Crutchfield. Thanks for the direction....

?LO3 CAL?

My Bel 980 does the same thing, but i never take it off the windshield. If the detector gets too hot or is sittin in the sun for too long that's when it usually throws that code. If you let it cool down it probably works fine. It also gets random KA warnings (usually about 1-3 strength) when it's too hot. Granted, I've had mine for a few years, but I'd say you probably leave it out in the sun like i do. It's just the nature of the beast.

Years ago, when I had a 980, mine did the same thing! If I remember correctly, the problem popped up with more and more frequency after having the thing for a year or so. Bel sent me another for free and 6 months later the new unit started doing the same thing. Always in the TX heat too....

Get a Passport 8500 or a V1. Problems solved.

Heat had nothing to do with this one though. I always had it on my passenger side and I hid it under the passenger headrest. More stealth that way.

I thought about going the cheap way (refurning it) but in the end decided to splurge. What the hell!! It's just my hard earned money that I have to slave to make.....

I've had the Bel 980 for a few years now...well probably more like 5 or 6 years. I've had no problems with it and it still works great. I will upgrade to a V1 sooner or later but I keep waiting for this one to die lol. I cannot begin to count the thousands of dollars in tickets/insurance premium hikes this thing has saved me from. Thanks Bel
