Mr. Wans OIL THREAD
Background info:
- Cousin's 00 VW Golf 2.0L 4-cyl needed an oil change
- Not trusting Jiffy Lube's parts, decided to buy the parts and take them to the shop to have it done (not my car, car located in different city)
- Went to AutoZone, Walmart, and Kragen...none yielded a 502.00 compliant oil. Kragen did yield 3 qts M1 0w-40 at a ridiculous $5.99/qt but they didn't have enough so it didn't work; wouldn't have bought it anyway. No German Castrol 0w-30 or Castrol 5w-40 at AutoZone either, so out of luck on any VW 502.00 oil. I did buy a Mobil 1 M1-205 Filter at AutoZone for $10.99.
- Decided to go with the next best choice, actually somewhat better of a choice, Mobil 1 10w-30 Ext. Performance, as it is a stable 10w-30 that stays in grade and the HT/HS is decent and actually STAYs roughly the same, opposed to M1 0w-40. Went to Walmart and picked up a 5qt jug of Mobil 1 10w-30 Ext. Performance for $25.96.
- Total cost after taxes, roughly $40.
Quick Lube scandal:
- Originally planned on going to Jiffy Lube and have 'em do the job for $25 labor. Yes expensive, but uncle's mechanic in San Francisco was on vacation.
- Uncle decides to try locally owned Pennzoil shop by his house
- Turns out they charge $36 for a regular oil/filter change but they did NOT give him any credit for bringing his own oil/filter!

So Amsoil 5w-40 has been reformulated
So, they apparently reformulated Amsoil 5w-40 as of today. It now meets the following specs:
- BMW LL-04= Low SAPS
- VW 505.01= Yes, that spec for the VW PD engines, outdated now lol
- Mercedes 229.521= Latest revision for 229.5 spec???
Note: Not approved by the vehicle manufacturers, simply recommended by Amsoil, which I personally don't have a problem with. After all, who wants to pay over $50,000 (possibly even $100,000 or more) to have an oil approved by a manufacturer for one spec, not to mention that this oil will meet many specs, can you imagine how much that'll cost? Plus, you have to have it re-approved each time it gets reformulated.
I think this will be a good product, as much as I dislike Amsoil's MLM marketing system and shady business practices, as the PAO based Amsoil 5w-40 will be much more shear stable than the current GrpIII based 505.01 oils, which often thin out of grade and do not provide the best wear protection possible.
The interesting thing that I find about the new reformulation of this oil is that it is an API SM/CF type formulation, which means that it is now using a reduced amount of ZDP additives; previous formulation was an API SL type formulation. I guess that they switched to the API SM type formulation due to the low SAPS levels required by the new Euro specs such as BMW LL-04, and the API SL level of ZDP Anti-wear additives was capable of meeting the new SAPS limits for emission control. I wonder what anti-wear additives and detergents they're using now to still provide good wear protection over long drains...

So what should I run in the VW next
Now that you've heard the quick lube story, what do you folks that I should run in the VW 2L next?
I'm trying to get something that is ACEA A3/B3 rated this time....thoughts?
Here's my list...I really want to try the new Amsoil 5w-40, but don't particularly care for an SAE40. If Mobil 1 Truck and SUV 5w-40 becomes avaliable again for $20 in a 5qt jug, I may use that with a $6 PureOne filter for 10-15K drain (either oil).
GC 0w-30 is an attractive option but I've had 0 luck so far in locating it.
Thoughts?

I have a number of reasons for not liking you, but none of them have anything to do with your not being american.
I don't even what the hell you are, aside from a total moron.
So, quit trying to play the racist card everytime someone bashes you, we ALL know its full of shit, like you.

OUCH...this thread is off topic already.....
Sorry to intrude into this conversation, but its pretty bad to tell anyone to go to hell.
Saying something like that is very serious. I don't know what happend in the past threads, but all I know is that we are all just trying to help and give each other opinions. Arguing is fine, but cursing someone is never good.
