Moped
I was thinking about getting one like the yamaha zuma for the summer to drive to friends houses and work. They are really fuel efficient i could end up just being able to pay for it buy the money i save on gass. Its only like 2,200 less taxes no special licence required. I was thinking about putting 1,500 down and just financing the rest over the summer. Anyone have one?

Walking would save you $2,200, and you may lose some weight

Good for you.
So buy it or go invest in something.
If you talk like the money's not a problem, I don't see why you're asking.

I guess you are only 19, but if you aren't still in high school I wouldn't touch it. OR, get something off craigslist for a few hundred and save the rest. At your age not worth spending 2,200 on a new moped.

A scooter makes sense in certain settings, and my buddy bought a used one back in the day to go from West LA to UCLA for 3 years for a master's degree before selling the scooter to someone else for about the same amount he spent to get it.
I don't know anyone who has ever had a moped.

It's especially good for areas where parking is difficult, but vehicle traffic is not insane.
My buddy was scared a few times by oblivious drivers in West LA streets, but never was hit or took a spill. And he had his scooter for the 2 years it took to get his first post-grad degree, not 3.
Try Craigslist or local ads to get a used scooter if you want to avoid financing. G/L.
I think it's alright. I think people hate on them way too much. I would much prefer a motorcycle though, especially at $2200 (Kawasaki 250r, a nice starter bike). Obviously that requires another license, but at least you wont get made fun of. Anyone know the insurance rate difference?

A scooter usually has a motor over 50cc, and as such, is classified as a motorcycle in most states... so if you're thinking about getting a scooter over 50cc, you might as well just get a motorcycle, since you're going to need a motorcycle license anyways...
I've been surfing mopedarmy lately, and it'a a great resource for vintage moped information (I'd never spend 2K on a fucking moped or scooter, unless it was vintage)...

I'd love to get a 70's Honda Hobbit/PA50II, Motorbecane 50v, Vespa SI, Puch Maxi Sport, or Indian moped...

I had a friend when I was in HS that had a batavus moped which got him around the city quicker than walking or taking the bus... It was a blast to drive...

Whenever I look at scooter or moped prices (vintage ones are going up and up), the old reliable Honda CB series looks like a better option...
I'd like to get an old 86-87 Honda Rebel 450 one of these days, but I'm afraid of soccer moms on cellphones driving SUV's

I think if you're just looking to get it to go to you friend's house, etc then just spend this $2200 on gas for your car. The money you save on gas will NOT likely pay for the moped for a couple years unless your friends live 50 miles away.

I had my first and only wreck on that bike, which was caused by a soccer mom on a cellphone driving a mini van

Reminds me of a joke I used to hear quite often in the late 70's/early 80's when mopeds were more common:
What does a moped and a fat girlfriend have in common?
They're both fun until your friends find out.
Seriously though, scooters are neat.

I guess its still popular
i have an 04 zuma that i use to get around town (im in college).
it works really well, but you will have a hard time getting it over 40mph unless its downhill with a strong tail wind LOL.
i avg. ~90 miles/fill up which is usually about 1.25 gallons(tank capacity is 1.5)
you should buy used though. i bought mine used with 400 miles on it for 1400.
IMO the zuma is the best of the scooters....its got two big offroad headlights, big knobby tires(drastically improves the ride quality and stability over the smaller vespas, vinos, and metropolitans), and its a 2 stroke(the other benefit of getting used cause the all the new ones are coming with cats and stuff on them which makes them even slower)
