To mod or not to mod?

Had the GT-R for a bit more than a year now and the bug is starting to bite for some more POOOOOWWEEERRRRRR!, as Jeremy would say. What are you guy's thoughts on modding a car that's still under warranty and still worth quite a bit of $$$. Once a tune is done, it's done and nissan will always be able to tell that it was running more boost than it's supposed to. I sometimes think that i'd like something else but I'd have to come up with a whole lot more money to get what i'd be satisfied with (gallardo, 997.2 turbo s, gt3 etc).
I can get almost 100 awhp with a midpipe and a tune. I plan to keep the car at least another year or two.

Query for OP - saw your comment about doing a tune and it being "permanent." I know for the M5, ESS offers a portable device that you use that saves your factory tune before you download your performance one and allows you to switch back. It's my understanding it clears the computer from anything that indicates things had been running out of spec. Anything like that for the GTR?

You can put it back to the factory map but nissan will always be able to tell if you've been running more boost than stock. It logs all that stuff. Gotta pay to play. At least there are now more options for repairs, tranny repairs and builds other than the nissan dealer. If I had a major problem i'd just ship it to Forged, AMS etc and have them repair it.

Yeah the Cobb AP is the standard for tuning the GT-R. They even have one now that you can tune the transmission and change to the different launch controls. How much is a Cobb AP for your mazda? Just curious how much the GT-R tax is.

That was kind of my point - the ESS tune clears that log out on BMWs; no one does the same for the GTR?

But the GT-R does have some more features like the ones you just mentioned. And I think you can like view the KR on your info screen via AP or something. Not sure, but there were some extra cool stuffs you can do with your car.

Here's the coolest one, it let you change the tunes while driving.... WTF I WANT THAT!

It is a dangerous bug if you get it.

My guess is if you buy the exhaust bits, etc you will grow tired of the performance and want to add more.

There is no end to it. I know guys with 700hp Vipers and Vettes who aren't satisfied.

Yes I like to think that I do. I think that they would go to bat for me as much as they could but Nissan has the final say. Getting them to repaint the roof on my Frontier and getting a $25k transaxle replaced are two different things lol.

Isn't it $995 on the Cobb store? I'm sure you can get it for like $950 somewhere else.

It's a great deal considering you are comfortably squeezing out about 10%hp/12%tq with a device only. This is just with the over the counter maps, I'm sure you can get so much more with custom tuning.

No. Not as of now. Everything is still logged.

The one with clutch and tranny adjustment is $1500. I'd prolly just get that one for future upgrades. I think I know where I can get one for $1250.
Yeah, they (Cobb) have some beta maps that are crazy. I'd definitely get the midpipe too, that's good for 15+ and also helps with the GT-R's lame ass exhaust sound.

I'd prolly get a custom e tune to start with, drive that for a while then move up to full bolt ons (DP, injectors, intake, actuators, full exhaust)) and that's about as far as I can go with stock turbos. Get a real dyno tune at that stage.

Ahh here comes T, always a voice of reason. I know exactly what u are talking about. My buddy has an unmolested 94 six speed Supra TT with 34k. Looks like a freaking time machine.

Get the stage 1 at least. You aren't really modifying much hardware-wise if you are just getting one or two the basic bolt-on with a tune.

I say get the COBB AP and mid-pipe and enjoy it for another year or two, then get what you really want. I'd stay away from the other mods you mentioned personally.

The infamous Nissan black box will always have a record if one does an ECU flash, unlike Porsche which can be reverted back to stock before going for service.

I say keep it stock, when the 2013 GTR drops you are going to want to get your hands on the Black Edition for sure.
