I absolutely love the Golf R but can't justify $35k for it. Plus, I really want the Scirocco R.

Add another vote for the speed3. I can't see the price for that type R, as pointless as the mugen si.

I know the R is a little bit pricey, but it's definitely NOT as pointless as the Mugen Si.

I think the VW is the better bet, I came from a MKV GTI and i wanted to get an R but the thing about the R is and most VW shops will tell you is that its over rated. Its heavy and slow compared to all its competition. The GTI is easier to make faster and funner. The awd on that car makes it handel great but when your on the highway and a kid with a chipped gti passes you and you cant keep up you will regret buying such an expensive car. Not to mention parts on it are $$$$$$ for no reason. Yes the VW is sick and has alot of features but if you want more bang for your buck get the GTI. The 2013's are supposto be faster then the MK6's... hope this helps

IIRC, a local dealer is still trying to sell a Mugen Si. Last I saw, they dropped the price to ~$24k

From what i see the golf R has everything that the TL has and some more, maybe not the class factor. But driving one is so much fun compared to the TL, its like night and day. It feels light, nimble and you feel the pull. The TL just feels heavy, no matter what mod i added to it...

In terms of looks a bone stock TL doesnt look better then a golf R. A moded TL very likely but ive already seen nice pictures of a moded R.

It would be hard going from a TL to a Jetta...But not to a performance hatch like a golf r. I believe, the golf comes equipped with the same things the tl has and then some (as you admitted this too.)

In terms of pure driving experience, its definitely a class or two above the tl lol. However best wishes to whatever you decide to do.

The VW dealer just down the road from where I live has a white Golf R sitting in the showroom. I'm going to take a peek at it tomorrow. Defiantly not buying, but may as well check it out since i don't have to go out of my way.

$35K is a lot of coin for a Golf R...... That same price point might bring an STI or Evo MR.

So here's my question ... What do the STI or Evo bring that the Golf R doesn't?

Because for just a little bit of money to APR, you're looking at a 300/300 AWD Golf R.

Theyre faster stock vs stock The Golf R has a much nicer interior then either the STI or EVO, and for that alone, it would get my money. Its also more grown up and understated compared to the STI/EVO.

Is Golf R really as fast as STI/EVO MR?

All the reviews that I've read/watched gave me an impression that it's a fast street car.

And saying that chipping a Golf R would turn up the power can be said for STI/EVO too.

Ive read that its not quite as fast as the EVO/STI, but it can hold its own. 0-60 in the low 5s IIRC.

Yes, but what I'm saying is that whatever perceived weakness the R has can be remedied fairly easily by 30 more HP.

I mean, at what point does 0-60 in 5.7 seconds become not fast enough for $35k?

And that's with 256hp.

I'm really not talking about 0-60. I mean who cares about 0-60? Do we really talk about 0-60 when we talk about STI/EVO?

A Golf R is a nice refined hot hatch, but definitely not as hard core fast as STI/EVO, period.

Ill be Devils Advocate on this one:

When that same $35k gets you into an STI that hits 60 nearly a second sooner.

For the record, the Golf R would still get my money.

I guess ... I'm wondering what another 44hp for $600 would do ... but as JS said, you could say the same about the STI.

And I agree with your sentiment. I just do not get the STI.

The STi is just a brutal daily driver. Its a very harsh ride stock...But I haven't been in one post 2004, so the newer ones with the selectable stuff might be much better.

I would assume the R is probably a very nice ride for daily use.

Let me go find the link but just to put some argument closer to the end... The EVO can destroy both the STI/Golf R quite easily....

That said. The Golf R and STI are actually really similar around a track (still slower though), at least at VIR and the R is down what 50 hp on the STI.

Reference C&D lightning lap

The Volkswagen faithful might not think of their beloved, premium, all-wheel-drive R models as direct competitors for putative rally cars such as the Subaru WRX STI and the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. But pricing and driveline-configuration similarities make such comparisons irresistible. In terms of lap times, the 2008 R32 (VW’s erstwhile prodigal son) didn’t hold up well to the Japanese. We recorded a 3:21.8 lap for the R32 in 2008, which is a long way off the times set last year by the WRX STI (3:13.8) and the Evolution SE (3:10.6). And the GTI, as good as it might be, hasn’t been able to keep up with the rally replicas.
http://www.caranddriver.com/features...2-class-page-4

So really saying that the STI is in a different league with speed isn't true. Evo yes.

Now try justifying 35k for an STI which is 0.2 seconds quicker out of a 3 minute lap which is really damn close (so its basically a drivers race)
And the golf R comes with an interior thats 100000 times better than the STI

Winner winner chicken dinner

That was the case with the R32 really. The R20 is quite a bit different since it has a turbo. It shouldn't really cost more and then you have awd so you can actually use the power your putting in it, while the GTI will just light up its tires and throw the steering wheel around

What price do you put on refinement?

The Subie and Mitsu are far from refined.

The R is pretty much on par with the Subie in the performance area.

I was just throwing out comparable cars. And the Subie would be a bit harsh as a daily driver, and both of them are rental car grade interiors compared to the Golf. Even with that said, living here the Golf and the Evo would be a tough choice.

A new Golf R or CPO 335xi.... that's a tough call. I owned an APR GTI and had more fun in the city with it than my STI. Way more comfortable as well.

Quick Reply: Might be trading in for a Golf R
