mercury topaz

hey guys, i know this is the acura forum and i know that i might get flamed, but most of yall are knowlageable mechanics. heres my problem. i have a 1991 mercury topaz and it wont start. now, the tempo/topaz car club of north america sucks really bad because they couldn't help me with my problem, so i'm going to pick ya'lls brains. i put the engine back together, from the head up. the timing is correct, i drained the fuel tank, i've cleaned the fuel injectors by hand, changed the spark plugs, gapped them, and the wires, with the rotor and the distributor cap. i've had to replace the fuel pump, and the battery, because this car sat so long. but, still, it won't start. does anyone here own a ford product and know about the pushrod 4 banger? any help appreciated

oh, and btw, i'm not a n00b, i work on cars, and mobile electronics, and eps cl is one of my best friends, so don't flame
thank you

Maybe it's not an engine issue at all? Does the starter click at all when you turn the key?

Perhaps there is no power going from your new battery to the starter.. worth checking.

Is the rotor set right in the distrubitor? Worked on a friend's 91 eclipse that wouldn't start. Finally figured to move the rotor and tried to start at each point...after moving to the 3rd point it started. Before that we were just spraying gas into the cylinder but sparking the wrong cylinder.

Agreed

The majority of Ford products have a trunk safety switch for the fuel pump. This switch will often trip if hit in the rear AND if the car has been sitting. Should be a little red button somewhere along one of the inner trunk walls. If it hasn't been tripped then put of guage on the rails to make sure you are indeed getting fuel.

I just found your thread, and we're in similar situations, but my $200 beater is a '89 Bonneville. What about the engine computer? Does the car evne attempt to start, or is it just turning over? any sensors unplugged? have you cleaned the intake of gunk using carb cleaner, and have you tried starting fluid?
