Mazda RX-8

Anyone have one? I'm thinking of giving my car to my parents, and I want something a big more sporty. The traditional comparison (rx8-350z-s2000) has come up, but I think the rx8 would be the most practical of the bunch, while still not giving up too much sportiness.

Opinions?

Decent car, overall. I just wish it had more room. There is no way I could ever make it back from a trip to Costco with all the stuff I buy. Plus, the gas mileage sucks donkey balls.

I drove one twice, when a friend was shopping for a car......neat vehicle, but sloooow.

That car had no balls, Mazda needs to come out with a Mazdaspeed version.

Way too slow and terrible gas mileage and sorta boring looking IMO... Not a fan, but it handles well and is reasonably practical compared to the compeition.

RX-8 needs a turbo from the factory. N/A rotary engines = weaksauce.

Manual. It does indeed have poor torque. However, if you keep it high in the revs, like I did during my test drive, then it's not a problem.

I'd go with a G35 Coupe or S2000

turbo rx7's are AWESOME! but that wouldnt really be an alternative since i think he's looking for a new car. i have a 350Z, but the interior is falling apart already. yeah its covered under warranty, but taking it to the dealer every two weeks is bullshit. people call it the rattle box. if i could turn back in time, i wouldve gone with the G35C. at least it has quality interior and half the problems the Z has....

There you go buddy..The RX-8 is slow, the 350Z is a rattle box so its the S2000 all the way..That little sucker moves out..

im actually considering selling the Z and getting a slightly used S2000 myself. i drove it around for a while few days ago and i fell in love with it. quick, super responsive, nice stiff chasis, beautiful handling, and the thing just loves being pushed. plus its got a nice convertible drop top for the upcoming summer!

A colleague has an RX-8 and is very happy with it; he's had nothing but positive comments about it. The GF and I looked at one on Saturday before she bought an RSX. I was quite impressed with the amount of space inside the car (the trunk is still a bit small). In particular, the back seats had a lot more space than I had expected, although to be fair the GF is 5'-2" so she had the seat pulled way up.

We did not drive it, but I was generally favorably impressed with it. The one thing that I did not like that would take a lot of getting used to is the digital speedometer. The tach is where you would normally expect the speedometer to be and the speedometer is just a digital readout in the lower portion of the tach.

My lil bro has an RX8, no torque at all, but when he has that engine spinning high, it moves. Like i stated in another post, he was able to walk an S2000 on the highway.

thx all for the comments

like all car enthusiasts...i want ALL cars...and in fact i was looking today at used 350z's

the g35c isnt in consideration...my friend has one, and while i like the exterior...i dont like the interior enough to pay the premium over the 350z

the 350z (2004 or newer, used) is a strong consideration...i like the styling, and this is probably the only time in my life i could enjoy a 2 seater sports car

the s2000 is nice, but i think it would be WAAAY to unpractical, especially since it would be my primary car (giving my cl to my parents)

so (for today at least), im leaning heavily towards a 350z...i figure if i get a touring with 18's, 6sp mt, <10k miles, <$26-28k OTD, ill be in good shape.

I really dont want to spend more than 28-29 OTD, dont want to be car-poor

any opinions on my plan? though i enjoyed autoXing my car, i dont think id be doing it enough to really want to sacrifice raw power over a bit more cornering capability

Saab 9-2X? Subaru WRX with Saab upgrades and huge GM discount.

'05 Mustang....why not?

'04-'05 GTO

Dodge Magnum

etc. Depends on what you want...large straight line performance or a high-revving corner eater.

the 350Z doesn't offer much more room than an s2k

if i was looking for a RWD coupe in that price range it would be between the '05 GTO and G35C. the GTO doesn't look as good as the G35, but it has the LS2.

Sorry but the S2000 must not even have been messing around with your bro because an RX-8 will not walk an S2000.

exactly was i was thinking.. no matter how high the rx8 was revving and how hard its being pushed, when the S2000 is pushed that thing just shoot's up the rpms and its out of there. the rx8 is way too slow.. even for a manual. 0-60 time is really slow for a car that costs nearly 30k and is considered a sports car.. plus, with less than 240hp you would expect to get decent gas mileage out of a small engined car, but that thing just eats gas. i dont know how practical this car is at all.

the S2000 wins here with me. i have the 350 and with all the squeaks and rattles its producing with only 5000 miles on it, its kinda annoying. grease stains on the windows, the stupid automatic window up/down feature never closes all the way, and the damn jumpy transmission and gives me crazy whiplashes.

its definitly a great car when pushed and trying to have fun with it, but as a primary car, its definitly a rouch and non-relaxing ride. and if youre used to the refined interior/quiet ride of an acura.. this car is totally the opposite. i would stick with honda's.

CL Platano & aaronnn, i hate to magazine race, but manual RX-8 vs S2000 are within a couple 10ths to 60 and the same for the 1/4. So with the two cars it's a drivers race. And i never said that he ran the s2000 hard, but he walked away slowly. from 60 till about 130. At the end he had about 2 cars on the S2000. So you are telling me that the S2000 wasnt trying till 130ish. I guess he must have a shit load of power to just cruise while my bro was at WOT. I can understand if the 2 cars were driven by equal drivers, then the s2000 will pull a couple car lenths on the RX8, but i have seen it with my own 2 eyes, and the guy was racing as he did the 3 beeps. Call BS all you want, i have nothing to gain nor loose by telling you what i saw.
