Man backs car through parking tower wall

TULSA, Okla. (AP) - A 67-year-old Oklahoma man had quite a fright after backing his car at high speed through a seventh-floor exterior wall of a parking garage.
Ralph Hudson says his foot got stuck between his Mercedes' brake and gas pedal as he was backing up in a towering parking garage in downtown Tulsa on Wednesday.

The car burst through the building's exterior wall and sprayed debris on a parking lot below before stopping just in time. The car's trunk and part of its back wheels were left hanging precariously out of the building but officials were able to safely drive it back inside.

Police officer Jason Willingham says Hudson was not ticketed over the incident.

At least it wasn't a Toyota

How come there isn't any back end damage?

seems like the tail lights are built stronger than the body.

German engineering at its finest. We were toying with some internals on a totaled last generation C280 and man those things are built like tanks underneath it all.

That's what I'm thinking. Poor design, too.

Every garage I've been to has a 1' thick concrete and rebar wall up to about waist height.

On a different topic - what the hell would he be ticketed for? The garage is probably private? so maybe littering with the bricks?

you can see the right quarter panel fucked up...but if it came straight through....wouldn't the back end receive major damage even if the walls weren't that strong?
I mean barely bumping into a wall will cause a little damage.

That wasn't the car that went through first. The Toyota is on the ground behind the trees.

Maybe the car didn't back out but actually crashed into the wall

Although to be fair, you actually might not be able to tell whether there is a difference.

The brick is veneer....look closely.....it's why the car has very little damage to it, and also why the "bricks" were thrown halfway across the parking lot instead of straight down.

The exterior wall of the parking garage is a simple curtain wall. It's not structural.

but you would at least think there would be something to prevent a car from going through the wall. around here the barriers are pretty intense.

Holy shit.

I would be pissed if my car was the one on the ground that got sprayed with bricks.

Exactly, Moog type-s....Its not a solid wall, kinda looks like dry wallish.
Doesnt look to be too safe in a storm or anything.

A conc. wheel bumper is all that is required.

You can't design a parking structure idiot (oldie/blue-hair) proof.

Parking structures are not designed for high speed...aka stomping on the accel. pedal. A conc. wheel bumper will "stop" a car from 5 mph.....when pulling into a space at parking speed.

However, most new parking structures are concrete construction, utilizing the exterior conc. walls as part of the structural portions of the building.

I guess I haven't paid much attention to the various parking structures around SF but my general impression was that most had more than a concrete stop. I'll check it out next time I'm in one
