Maintenance for older car with low mileage?
Maintenance for older car with low mileage?
So we have a '00 Pathfinder in the family that has been sitting in the garage most of its life, except for the first couple of years. It's got less than 40k miles on it, and so far it's running like new still.. Except for oil changes and I think a transmission fluid change, I don't remember doing much to it.
Question is, what should be replaced as a precaution? The car is about 10 years old (but sitting in the garage most of the time, driving no more than 10 times a year), so I'm thinking that the timing belt and all the other belts should be replaced. I guess also all the fluids (transmission, differential, coolant, engine oil).
Is there anything else that should be replaced?

Unless it was the recommended mileage I would not replace the timing belt if applicable. I would also leave the original differential fluid in place. I would, however, change the thermostat.
How are the tires? Any cracking or dry rot? If so, they should definitely replaced. As should be any applicable drive belts.

Yeah I think the fluids are definitely on the list...
Tires were replaced recently so they're good to go... I only saw minimal cracking on the surface, very very minor... but they were replaced to be safe..
What's the reason for leaving the diff fluid? Care to explain?

If the truck was being used in extreme conditions or subjected to heavy use, it should be replaced regularly. In your application, however, I wouldn't worry about it.

If it were mine I would replace the fluids such as the engine oil, transmission, engine coolant, and brake fluid. I cannot stress the importance of the last item. Brake fluid back then was glycol based, meaning it is hygroscopic. It absorbs water. Even sitting unused it will absorb moisture.

Curious, I thought it was mileage or time? I have the same concern for my wife's 2002 MDX that has 41,000 miles since new. Most trips are five miles or less. I did just have all other belts, hoses and fluids changed.
