M5 conversion from 540i 6 spd

talked to my customer and he owns a 97 BMW 540i 6 spd, and he told me he wants to mod his car and asked for my opinion

first he wants 19in wheels and tires, which i don't recommend coz of the road in Toronto and the decrease in performance dramatically (he has 17" for summer and 16" for winter now)

then i told him to get the M5 18" wheels and tires and to transform his 540i to a M5.

after i showed him the photos of my car and he got so hyped up that how i can transform my ride from bone stock TL-P into a half show car, and he wants to do a M5 conversion now

not only that he wants to repaint his car to carbon grey as well

i have seen ppl done this before, it was even an option at the dealer for the 2002-2003 540i, you could get the M5 package for 5000 dollars which has teh M5 bumper and wheels

after a rough calculation, including paint and body work it would make the conversion near 5000 dollar range, which has to include new headlamps(angle eye), HID lights, new fog lights, taillamp, M5 wheels, M5 front and rear bumper, M5 mirror and of coz labour and the paint job.

now just try to gather the parts and see if i can find some gd and cheap parts for him.

hope this project can come true

dun think anywhere in the street can get full of the M5 perforamnce, beside at the track

so go for the look is gd enough, besides a 540i 6spd isn't too far behind the M5 in terms of performance

280hp vs 400hp ? yeah not to far behind. 120hp is like a car length in the 1/4.

Hmm...I was wondering why I had seen a few M5 look-alike cars without the M5 motor. Now it all makes sense...

5000 for everything? a paint job to match the luster and quality of bmw oem would cost that by itself. as for everything else.......just don't put an M badge on the car, whatver you do

I hope he doesn't put the M5 badge on it...

It will definitely make the car look more aggressive but make sure he keeps the 540 badge or at least debadge everything except the BMW emblem for a clean look. I really dislike the poser look.

i guess he won't

but he wants the 01-03 style headlamps and taillights, and the M5 bumpers as well

makes a big difference when compare with a 97 540i

if u think it's 5k, youre DREAMING.
doesnt matter if its honda paint, a nice PJ is still approaching 4k. and paintjobs have little to do with the actual paint. it is based on how many primer / coats / how meticulous the painter will get as far as door jams, under the hood, etc. (labor). like maaco will just spray your car without really prepping it, that y its cheap and doesnt last long.

and getting 18 in deep dish bimmer rims and bumpers, even off of ebay gotta be a like around a few grand. oh yea, AND newer headlights housing with bulbs.

in all honesty looking at these figures, he might as well upgrade to a used m5. ..depending on how many miles he has, maybe it wouldnt be that much more to pick up a 97 M5. (when compared to buying rims / HLs/ bumpers / PJ)

and you get the performance to boot.

if he wants to do a cheap project, then i would suggest No paintjob or headlights. and just getting the bumpers and imitation M5 rims.

BTW, something that also needs to be considered is getting the quad exhaust. i dont care how many mods a 540 has, the exhausts are the number one thing that sets off a m5 from all other 5 series.

Why would anyone paint a car that doesn't need to be painted. Such a waste of money. And unless you pull the motor and part of the interior it won't look good without a seriously skilled painter.

just let him get the replica M5 kit and he will save crazy dough. Also that 540 motor is awesome when a supercharger is added.

It looks alright

Cool

IMHO waste of time and especially money...

I love "sleepers" and so I would prefer doing it the other way (2 choices)

1) Get your 540i 6sp and cram in the M5 engine...

or

2) Get an M5 and debadge the shit out of it to look more like a regular 540...

It's like that guy that came to the RuddFuckers meet in his G35 coupe with the Skyline badging across the back and his car is an auto trans.... P L E A S E......

Gentlemen... Function or Form everday of the week...

In other words... Who gives a shit what it looks like... as long as it blows your fucking doors off...

this is what he needs to do if he wants the car to look m5ish.

Front and rear bumper about $1000
m5 replica wheels around $1000 on ebay
newer celis rear led tails $350-400
hella angel eye headlights $500 w/out hid and about $800 w/hid

I'm not sure what he's gonna do about the exhaust tho. It'd be bank to convert to quad IMO.

Performance wise. The 540 is not even close to the performance of an m5. You would need to sc a 540 to get near m5 performance in a straight line.

I really hope he doesnt decide to badge the car w/m5 badging though. That's super :ghey: IMO

Wow,

once again the sheer idiocy of samkws is here for all to see. You love to prove again and again that you are a fucking moron.

An M5 "conversion" is going to cost A LOT more then 5 grand....there are a lot of interior differences that arent cheap to do.

How do I know. I have a friend who jut turned in his leased 02 540 6spd and while he didnt even attempt to do a conversion he did add the things from the M5 he really liked but couldnt get in a 540 (like the alcantara headliner.)

Thats different. The G35 is called the Skyline in Japan. Just like some people with 2nd gen TLs replace their emblems with INSPIRE emblems.

And why a paint job? If he wants to make it look good, do the stuff you mentioned, but there is no need for a paint job. And no M badges like others said.

My main point in all of that was that I found it ridiculous that someone would badge their G35 coupe with the moniker "Skyline GT35" but specificaly only have it in an auto trans... I understand why he named it that(at least he did put 35 in there) but I vehimently oppose such blatant miss-representation...

If you google "skyline GT35" = nothing... it comes back without a single website let alone picture of said model...

If you ask any car enthusiat what comes to mind when you say the words "skyline GT"... I can tell you it's not the "infiniti G35 coupe" but rather the GTR...

I still think his car looks amazing...

hell no, he jsut want the bumpers and headlights and stuff, no performance upgrades or whatever badges, but probably he would debadge i think

and his car is silver, he wants to paint it to grey

exhaust...maybe...but no M5 exhaust, just a muffler for some sound, but that would still run about 1000 dollars...after all it's a BMW

this is about what he wants to be, doesn't need any performance upgrades

Did I say he's gonna have a full conversion?

i think you better read it carefully and he just wants the exterior look, no interior or motor or whatever.

and it's not my car, he likes to spend money whatever he wants.

i have added things up it's pretty realistic for 5k if just for exterior, now only need an exact quote on the repaint job

and i dunno what's ur problem? you are talking shit here

M5 wheels (599USD)

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...MakeTrack=true

M5 look alike body kit (500USD)

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=36475

M5 replica mirror (250US)

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...spagename=WDVW

M5 guages

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...spagename=WDVW

M5 lip spoiler is not that expensive

01-03 taillights

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=33716

now only have to quote for the paint job, even painting/installating the bumpers would costs around 1000 for sure

Good luck if you want to do the M5 exhaust...thats why the M5 has runflats-needed the extra room from the spare tire tub to get the dual exhaust set up.

The sparetire tub is actually intact. It now houses the battery and the kit for pumping up the tire. I've had everything out of that area and it is still big enough for a spare.
