M3 or S4

Ok so, no shit....

I am THINKING of buying one of these cars in let's say... a year from now or less. I want to hear from my compadre's a great arguement as to why is one a better choice or the other. I love them both and I would love some critiscisms. No haters or BS please, I know alot about either car but would love to hear what others think.

Here's the bimmer forum http://forums.roadfly.com/bmw/ I hear the M3s have been experiencing some engine problems (they blow up). The S4s are nice...don't know too much about them. I would ge the M3...the audi interiors have always looked a little boxy and bland to me. Don't get me wrong...both cars are nice! Good luck in your choice!

I'd prolly go with the S4 too. It's a newer car with a new look, hopefully the engine won't explode, and it has the convenience of 4 doors. Oh yeah, and that quattro thing's cool too.

if we are talkin about the biturbo s4 then definitely the s4 otherwise i say m3 that engine problem should be fixed by the time you will be looking into it right?

we talking new? If so then it hard to pick which one since the new S4 isnt out yet. But then again i would go for the M3 since most of the bugs will be worked out by next year. Unlike the new s4, i dont think i would trust a new model.

M3 vs. S4

The new S4 isn't due out for about a year and a half, probably as a 2004 model. The specs aren't clear yet. The old S4 was a beast and great car all around. It's a tough call, considering we don't know the exact specs of the new S4. The M3 is an easy enough car to evaluate and it's great too.

Dollar for dollar, the Audi's a better buy tho. Just my opinion. It's a better all-around car, more flexible (4 doors and quattro). You can probably get a decent deal on a leftover 2001 as well.

S4 all the way. You can't beat AWD v8 RWD, you'd have to get another car for the winter and after spending all the money they'll be bending you over the table for i'm sure you'll want to drive it

definitely go for the S4. th potential of turbo far outweighs the M3. my friend has an S4 with chip, exhaust and intake and he pulls on m3s without any probs. you can get a new 2002 S4 for for 40k. take that extra 15k you would spend on the m3 and mod the hell out of it. with 15k worth of mods you would be able to run with 911 turbos.

also, the 2004 S4 will be a 4.2L NON turbo. wouldnt wait for it. go ahead and get the turbo. check out this site for aftermarket...

check out the dyno for the K04 upgrade.

I'd get the S4 ... I love the look of the M3, but I think the S4's Quattro, $15-20k lesser price tag, and mod potential make it the clear choice.

Plus, god forbid you needed a four-door in the next couple of years, you wouldn't have to sell the S4 =)

I'm sorry, I didn't realize I needed a membership to each thread in addition to my membership to this site. Where do I apply for this "membership?" In case I don't become a member to this thread, here is some advice: You want a debate? Then simply ask for one. It's kind of hard to give car advice if you don't plan on buying for awhile. I'm sure you know cars change and so will the opinions. Want to compare the M3 and S4? Fine, go right ahead but when you are ready to buy our opinions will be meaningless.

As for my current opinion, the M3.

Sorry if you don't feel my question has merit or how I shaped it. By all means clutter the thread with your opinion, oh wait, you did not have one, you simply had to state that you thought me asking the question initially was meaningless How the hell do you know what I value as good versus useless information? The opinions on this forum have NEVER been meaningless to me, maybe after you sit down and get to know some people you'll value their's too. Trust me, I'm a huge car fan I'll take what people say here and weigh it towards my decision which may be even sooner than you think.

Am I the only one anxiously awaiting Tom2's opinion?
As for my opinion, the old S4 is no comparison to the E46 M3, money being no object. As for the new, supposedly non-turbo S4, we'll have to see. Sounds like a monster.
If I had the cash, I'd take the 2002 M3 over a 2001 S4. Alas, money is a factor, so.....(All this and we have 2 Audis in the family. I LOVE Audis.)

My opinion:

The current S4 is better looking than the future S4 (basing it on the design of the new A4), plus I have heard that the new S4 will not have any turbos.

That being said, if I wanted an S4, I'd get the current bi-turbo model before they are gone.

On the other hand, I wouldn't suggest getting an M3 until you are ABSOLUTELY FUCKING SURE that the engine problems are fixed.

My point was that there currently is no competition between the two and when you are ready to buy who knows what will be out there. So why don't you "weigh that towards your decision." That's all, sorry for "cluttering your thread" for a key factor in this debate. I really did not expect you to be so touchy about it. Oh by the way, I have got to know some people here and value their opinions. Next time I'll make sure I am a member of your thread before I post in it. Sorry.

BMW M3 nice car , they are asking premium prices, engine woes.

S4 current model Bi-turbo, seems to be working fine after TBB scare, F-hose

New S4 will have the S6 V8 engine 340hp. THat engine is actually lighter than the 2.7T in current S4. WIll have a 6 speed. DOnt know the price, but would say~45-50k.

Any of these cars are a nice car to own.

I would consider the S4 over the M3.

Reasons: 1) Modability. APR and AWE Stage III kit can bring this sleeper to 412 HP! With just a chip/exhaust, the car is already producing 300HP to the crank!
2) Cheaper
3) M3 optimally tuned from the factory, thus to make more power, you'll have to spend more to achieve some
4) Handling debatably as good as the M3 after addition of coilovers, and better tires
5) Classic looks with classy interior, IMO
6) M3 with issue of engine problem in stock form

Wow,

I'm soo happy I posted this thread, it's nice to see where the board stands on opinion:

So far:

M3 has 8 votes

S4 has 13 votes

If I counted right.

Definitely go with a current gen bi-turbo S4 over the M3 considering you are rolling the dice with an M3 engine.
