That car looked like it was built really bad, I would expect it to hold up better from the initial impact.

Actually the problem was the crash itself but in all fairness stock cars are just welded tube frames and losts of open space, which is worse in this sort of crash than even a passenger car might have been. There is a metal gate that wasnt pinned closed so the frame rails of the car effective split either side of the end of the wall which drove right through the middle of the car. (Same crash as Michael Waltrip had about 15 years ago with similar results). Since the motor was ripped away, there is very little holding the two sides of the frame together other than a thick crossmember under the oil pan and a crossmember the very front. Once those two pieces are compromised, riiiiiip right in half all the way to where the driver sits where there are more crossmembers under the dash and floor. Had he hit the wall closer to the drivers side of the motor, it would have been him ripped in half. Lucky indeed.

As dgracer noted, what I noticed too was the impact against the wall. It looked like the new "soft" walls, and failed to reflect the inertia when he hit at that angle. That impact definitely hurt.
