My Oldsmobile was 665.

And, to the original poster, are you on that 420?

Every year Massholia holds a lottery for the low number plates that get turned in...

There were 4490 applications for the lottery last year. This year they had 238 plates...

Number 221 was the lowest number given away this year... Marie Carbone of Lynn Ma received plate number 6969

I've applied for the last 2 or 3 years, and the odds are pretty good, so maybe next year I'll hit

It's a status thing, isn't it? IIRC, I think I read somewhere Rhode Island does the same thing and people actually will their license plates to their heirs.

It's an oldschool masshole thing...

It USED to be the only way to get a low number plate was if you had some political connections... Most people didn't so it became desirable to have one. The state decided (by law) to hold a lottery instead to give out the low numbers plates in the fairest way possible...

In MA, you can "hand down" a low number plate number, so it's kinda like a family heirloom...

I just think having as few characters on the plate as possible is cool

It costs the same as a regular plate, but has some coolness factor of a vanity...
