Let's talk about a 300zx

Ok so for the past 5 months I have been wanting a 300ZX.When I lived in my old neighborhood the older guy around the corner had a red mint condition that he never drove. Come to find out he just sold it which made me start looking around for one.

So I thought about it and decided that I will not be modding my Mazda, rather take the money and buy a 300ZX I found this one on Craigslist an hour or so away from me...

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/ctd/2394486834.html

Has anyone had a zx on here and if so did u love it?

greddycl-s01 May 23, 2011 02:03 PM

thats in NJ, but i wouldnt pass up that deal...a 300zx turbo in worse condition went for 8k around where i live. that one seems to be in mint condition and its a 5spd...cant beat it

Moog-Type-S May 23, 2011 02:10 PM

 why?

KaMLuNg May 23, 2011 02:29 PM

weird that it was posted in SF area with a SF phone number??? but yes Union/Morris is near me in NJ...

Sarlacc May 23, 2011 02:32 PM

great car, timeless design, super easy to drive stick. I almost bought before getting my prelude. I still love them.

downsides....SUPER cramped engine bay, hard to work on. Can not use snow tires if you live in that portion of the world.

I believe the alternators...or one of the solenoids are prone to crapping out.

I have buddy who has had 2-3...loves them. I believe he currently has a TT model.

justnspace May 23, 2011 02:32 PM

i dont think you should do it.......

Sarlacc May 23, 2011 02:33 PM

Not a fan of that color combo. Do you due diligence when researching before pulling the trigger.

It IS in SF bay. Fremont/Union City/Newark are all close to San Jose CA.

greddycl-s01 May 23, 2011 02:39 PM

yea the area is NJ and i would know since i live 5 miles from Atlantic City

greddycl-s01 May 23, 2011 02:39 PM

CA and NJ are nowhere near close to each other

bluescreenofdeath May 23, 2011 02:46 PM

why if it's 'all stock, no any modification' :) like it says in the ad, does it have a license plate bracket that says 'Stage 4 300ZX TT' i wonder?

 What are you talking about?

Flipster23 May 23, 2011 03:41 PM

its in the bay area Union city Fremont is all around SJ like Tmnhs said....

I would be buying one stock and modding it, I don't like to buy anything modded because I like to be the one to mod it.

Haha it's cos in NJ right near NYC is Union city and Newark right near each other. It's funny that two cities with the same names are also near each other out in SF/SJ area as well.

SuperTrooper169 May 23, 2011 06:55 PM

6 g's for a car with 180k miles on it? I wouldn't do it personally.

Hapa DC5 May 23, 2011 06:56 PM

Where the fuck is San Jose, CA?

kobejunior May 23, 2011 07:33 PM

Did you (or the other two) completely missed Fremont, California plates on car and 510 area code in the craigslist ad? :tomato:

I wanted a Z32 for the longest time...and I read a lot about them. They're very hard to work on and should be considered only as a second car due to their age. A similar yr/mileage Supra would be a better daily driver (and more expensive to purchase). A lot of Z32 fans diss the Supra because the two are supposedly rivals, yet even as a Z32 fanboy, I'd take a Supra over a Z32.

Now...when I have disposable income, I'm pretty sure I'll pick up a Z32 because there's something about the car that just gets my attention.

lol. I work in SJ. We're from Philly originally so I can see why someone would get these cities confused.

rockstar143 May 23, 2011 09:07 PM

interesting that they have an alternator or solenoid issue...my stepdad has a 1996 TT with 9800 original miles on it. He even had the original michelin tires on it until 2 years ago. :)
His car kept dying when sitting, so he drives it more often now.

Needs a good detail and a radio upgrade...but great little car. If it has sentimental value and you can afford it, go for it! My childhood car I should never have let go because it would have been fun and cheap to make fast and was carb'd and rwd was a 1986 Corolla SR5 coupe.

Italiano May 23, 2011 09:11 PM

I wanted one of these as well, but after research i decided against it.Like others have said, they are hard to work on and heavy as shit.Supras are heavy as hell as well but have more potential with an upgraded single turbo etc..
To many miles for that one in my opinion:2cents: They are pretty though :toocool: Another down to them is they are a two seater,i ended up with a nissan 240sx with a RB skyline engine in it pushing 500hp and a 240 is alot lighter as well:2cents:

greddycl-s01 May 23, 2011 09:12 PM

sorry about the confusion but me being from NJ would think that SJ meant South Jersey...now i see that this car is located in CA

If you're talking about a MKIV supra, then you're tripling or quadrupling the cost for a good condition one.
The 300zx is a nice car if it's in good condition, depending what you want it for though. Like others have said though, they're a nightmare to work on with that super cramped engine bay.

yeah i agree a 240sx is way lighter than both of the cars posted above and you have the choice of a four seater which might be a little better dont get me wrong those 300zx are fast just not my taste, but if you like nd find a good priced one with low miles on it go for it

Still one of my all time favorite cars. Timeless design...

gatrhumpy May 24, 2011 05:18 AM

My friend had one. I'm surprised they don't have overheating issues. Was a nice car.

+1 , It's in very nice condition but still $6K is alot for a 15 year old 300ZX with 180K miles.

A neighbor up the street's son had one, as others had mentioned the engine bay is really tight. Nice car, little dated now on the interior but the exterior still has nice lines.

ThermonMermon May 24, 2011 09:17 AM

really depends on your intentions for the remaining life of the car....i mean, the thing has 180k miles...

if youre going to drive the hell out of it for the next ~25k miles and then firesell it at the first major problem, i say, YES, it could be worth a couple g's for the enjoyment over a couple years.

if youre planning on maintaining and repairing the car for another 50k+ miles, and treating the machine seriously, i say, NO, its a poor investment. you are paying 6k + much more for a lot of time and heartache.

..........................

if i were in your shoes, i would probably
1) entertain option 1 above...
then 2) realize that it would make more sense to just do a 2-3 year lease on a 370, which performs much better than the 300...
then, 3) say, fuck this all together, and not pull the trigger on anything.

Yea I am and a 300zx would make 3 cars

i've been doing some research and yea 6k is a little on the pricey side.. i'm looking at some 240's as well now, i'm just trying to get something to drive on the weekends to have some fun in...

justnspace May 24, 2011 09:31 AM

I would wait, for better cars down the road....
i'm def. picking up a used 392 challenger ....
plus, if you wait, you'll have moar monies.
6k for crap buckets is a waste of monies

think bout the options, later....
you'll have used cts-v's, mustang 5.0's, etc all for pennies.

Italiano May 24, 2011 10:06 AM

If you go the 240 route, get a 1995 model with a decent redtop silvia engine better known as a sr20 motor:thumbsup: They have sooo much potential. But be warned when you go the turbo route be prepared to pay to play:toocool:
Here in N.C a 95 year model doesnt have to have emissions testing, great for the best mods:2cents: Good Luck:thumbsup:
