Insurance Question
I had no clue where to put this so Mods you can move it to the right area...
Had a question about anyone who knows something about insurance and how it works. I am posting this question for a friend since his car got hit not mine.
The Background: I live in a fraternity. One of our pledges was working security and sober driving. He backed another brothers car into the car of another brother that a different pledge was driving.
Basically, one kid not driving his car ran into another car where the driver of the second car was not the owner either. Only the car who got run into had damage (2700) was the best estimate. I assume the kid who was responsible would want to claim insurance to help pay for it but I do not know the details.
Would the owner of the damaged car have to pay anything from his insurance since he was not in the car when it was damaged? Does the kid who was responsible need some sort of police report to get money from his insurance company? Will the kid who did its insurance go up if he was to claim it and not just pay it from his pocket? Are any other drivers or owner going to have to pay for anything?
As always, everyone expertise is greatly appreciate. Since I am still on my parents insurance, I have no clue how any of this works.
Thanks

The owner of the vehicle at fault would have to file a claim with his insurance carrier since he/she is the one that insures the car. Insurance carrier will do their investigation and verify if the at fault driver had permissive use of the vehicle or not. There is a possibility the insurance carrier could deny the claim if the driver is not listed as a driver on the policy as well. Just depends on the policy language.
The insurance company for the at fault driver would be secondary coverage.
As far as rates going up that's a very good possiblity. 2700 in damages that's a pretty good indicator it will be going up. You also have to remember whoever insures the vehicle is also going to have to meet their deductible so the insurance would pay for the repairs of 2700 less whatever the deductible is.
