Infinity I35 and G35...my 2 cents

Went over to the Infinity dealer at lunchtime today to test drive the I35. Drove the Sport edition, fully loaded. Definitely not a bad car although the (for lack of a better explanation) suspension is a bit bouncy on rough roads. The sport suspension is extremely hard and it corners like a dream. The pickup is good (not like our CLS because there is no sport shift) but it only has a 4 speed automatic.

The sticker on the car I drove was 37 and if you take off the navigation and the chrome wheels, it comes down to just under 33.

Had this car been available last year (meaning this version if it) I would have gotten it over my passat! {whole other ball of wax}

Anyhow, when I had come back from the test drive, they were pulling up a new G35. All I can say is OH MY GOD! Lightyears better (looking) than the G20 and while the car is smaller, there is adequate rear legroom. {the car was not yet ready for test drives, so I am on the list for that} Anyhow the sticker on that car was 32 and it has 260HP and sport shift. Seats are just as comfortable/supportive as ours and the brushed metal accents are neat! This will be one of those must drives before deciding on the next car. {trading in the passat, not the CL}.

Im looking into a G35. I think i am getting rid of my CLS pretty soon, i am waiting for the dealer around here to get one and give me a call to test drive it. Looks hot, DVD based navi. Is it quicker then the CLS? anybody have any idea?

g35

The G35 is Nissan luxury edition of the Skyline. Infiniti is giving it a shot before the Skyline comes out in 2004. The skyline will be the reason for everyone to get rid of their CLS. The thing is their will be a big shift in the sports car market when the Skyliine comes...look for better deals on all sports cars as the future Z, skyline, g35, IS300 V8 (upgrade edition)?, and upgraded WRX (280+???) come on the market.

It's only 3300lbs with just as much horsepower as the CLS and a WHOLE lot more torque. You do the math It kinda looks like a fish from the side but I prefer performance over looks so I might consider it in the future (that is if I don't get that 350 Z)

G35

Yes, it has the same horsepower and a lot more torque than the CL-S, but I've read a few test reports, and I think the 0-60 times are slower than the Type S cars. Maybe it has something to do with the gearing???

On paper, the G35 with its RWD setup, lighter weight and higher torque should accelerate faster...but in real life, it's probably very close to the Type S.

I'm sure the handling is nicer on the G35.

What I'm waiting for is the 6 spd G35 coupe coming out this fall. It will supposedly get a boost in hp to 280.

There has never been a formal test of the G35. A 6.5 0-60 was estimated but R&T said it was pretty conservative and was probably faster. Remember, the Alty was tested at 5.9 0-60 and the conservative estimate was 6.3. I think the G35 will be just the same if not faster than the CLS. But these numbers are insiginficant because the driver will determine who is faster (given that each car is almost the same). I suspect the G35 will have better highway pull due to the higher torque and it has a more aggressive gearing up top.

G35 is about 10 inches longer and the wheelbase may also be about 10 inches longer. I caught myself at the Infiniti dealer the other day, and yes the cars are well built but they styling just ain't me. The I35 SCREAMS Maxima and the Q45 looks bloated. Interiors are very nice.

Nice cars but they offer me no compelling reason to switch.

CLS = 232 ft/lbs
G35 = 260 ft/lbs

I think this is a significant amount of torque. the horsepower is the same for the two cars.

I believe he was comparing the tq figures from the maxima, which is at 245ft/lbs. However, in both cases (Max + G35) , i believe the tq figures to be understated. Dynos for the maxima are showing 231tq at the wheels with just an intake. Unless the intake added significant power, i would take that to mean the tq figures were understated to begin with.

Since I still have both cars in my possession (well, up until 2 night ago) I can definately say the Max (and G35 by association) has "a lot more" torque than the CL-S .. more than the slim 13lb advantage seen on paper.

Wait for the Nissan Skyline which will be far more powerful and has MANY Jap. mods lined up to use...over 15 body kits to chose from as well as supercharger and 2 turbo kits.

If the drivers are equal, and it's a stock for stock race,
barring factory freaks, That G35 is going to take us
for lunch. Unless Nissan screwed up the gearing..
They are going to be able to launch that RWD a lot
easier and with a lot more force than we can with
FWD. That RWD truely gives them launch advantage,
plus with RWD they will probably be loosing less hp/tq
to the torque converter, unless they put the engine
in sideways (no reason to) I expect Acura (hope) will
crank up the HP and torque on upcoming models, (2004).

That said, I'm sure people out their will be able to beat
G35's, but it is probably going to be one of the
following, 1 rare, 2 BS, 3 real
Waldo driver, or 4. the G35 driver wasn't really trying.

That said, their is always some car that is faster than
you! I'm happy with my ride..
