my ex's father had a late 80's 240 wagon 5 spd... and that thing was rare!!! sitting in the driveway it would get random ppl coming to the house and offering to buy it... it was a pastey yellow color too... but had the roof rack and all...

i remember driving it and i was so fascinated at the shifter... the 5th gear was 'electronic' o/d button... and i remember feeling dumb trying to figure out how to put it in reverse...

It sounds like he had a 1980-1986. It was actually called a 4-Speed with overdrive (m46 transmission). They stopped producing them somewhere in 1986, and in that same year, replaced the trannies with true 5-Speeds (m47 transmissions). The 4-Speed with overdrives are harder to find now days, but half the time there overdrive buttons do not work.

That's a very clean one. He even bought turbo wheels for it. Too bad he's across the country. I'm also not sure if it's a stick....

yea i know the car had some of the famous electrical problems that Volvo was famous for... but the o/d button definitely worked... that car was a tank and fun to drive... if he was willing to let i go, i would have bought it and repainted it...

UPDATE:

I think I found the car. It is an 88' 5-Speed Sedan. Black with tan interior with 195,000 miles. The car is in Venice (near LA), and I will go up there to look at it as soon as Saturday or as late as Tuesday, and hopefully will drive back with it if it checks out!

Also, I test drove a silver 90' 5-Speed for sale in my area. It drove and shifted excellent, and I just love the raspy classic sound of those older cars, but unfortunately it was in pretty beat up shape and the price he wanted was out of the question.

I'll keep you guys updated on my progress with the one for sale in Venice. -Jake

these are super common around here and trade for cheap...like $1000-1500 bucks for a runner. Buddy of mine has an 81 coupe with the 4 speed that he hasn't started in months.

They looked basically the same all the way up through the early 90's. The cool ones are the later model turbo/mt cars with the factory intercooler, which they only made for 1 or 2 model years.

UPDATE:

I got the car! It's the one that was for sale in Venice. It's a 1988 5-Speed and it has approximately 195,000 miles on it. The car runs like a champ. It's not fast, but it drives great.

I added this roof rack to it to complete the look:

My sister had a 91 249 5MT wagon back in the day. She loved it when she got it and hated it everytime it went into the shop (which was pretty frequent). She was lucky to get out of the shop for under $1000 typically it was $1500-2000.

As a side note the gas and brake pedals on those cars are ridiculously close together. I borrowed her car one day and I was wearing a pair of Timberland Pro work boots. I had to drive barefoot because I couldn't push the gas down without also hitting the brake.

I haven't had any problems with the pedals. I'm still trying to get use to the gear shifter though.

Haven't updated this thread in a while:

Got an oem radio:

Out with the old:

In with the new:

Gotta love the $12 tail pipe!

My friend's 350z:

My friend installed a Volvo accesory mini tachometer for me:

My friend's 90' 5-Speed 240 with mine:

I replaced these interior panels and had to take out the rear seats, half of the headliner, four grab handles, the top half of the seatbelts, and the trim molding to get to them:

Did an extensive cleaning to my interior:

Replaced my stock airbox because it had a hole in it:

My car next to a black 240, as well as a silver 84':

Just ordered these new remanufactured replacement tail lights:

That's it for now
