Well my girls accord coupe failed ny inspection for tires having low tread. The mechanic wants over 600 for 3 new tires. She asked if she can put tires on elsewhere and bring it back for inspection and he said she would have to pay tge 37 for the failed inspection and 37 again for a new inspection.

This sounds ridiculous. Anyone know more on this before I go over there?

 

Sounds like she is being charged per inspection. Wow, $37 seems steep. I think when we had inspections in FL it was like $10 or $15. It's been awhile since they did away with them. Perhaps someone from NY can chime in here. Good luck.

 

Seems reasonable- You presented the car as ready to pass an inspection- which the tech performed and found bad tires
So the car has failed the inspection- you pay for the time regardless

Then, you go somewhere else to buy tires, eliminating that profit margin for shop #1 and come back for another inspection- tech must repeat everything= you are paying to get it inspected

Unless there is a sign on the door- No Pass No Pay
Welll- you fail you pay, you pass you pay

 

Your right makes sense. They were ripping her off on the tires though so f them.

 

IF all he did was look at the tires...and he never hooked OBD to a machine. Tell the mechanic to kiss your ass. He should of never charged her, but if he did the entire inspection, headlights, engine check signs...etc..etc... then you must pay him.

And $35 is state mandated inspection cost, the mechanic has no control over it.

Also, what year is the accord?

 

I did my inspectin the other day and had the same question.

Here is how it goes,

1. If he did the complete inspection then its the $37 pass or fail.

2. If you fail then you get a temp. sticker and 10 days to fix whatever was wrong. Also when you go back for you re-inspection there is another charge, but i dont think its suppose to be the full $37 again.

 

So she should be getting a temporary inspection sticker for 10 days ?

Yes most mechanics say they will charge you if your call fails but thats real dick and i know most will say just get some neew tires or fix this then come back

 

He's being an asshole.. you should have something like 5-7 business days to bring it back and give you your inspection sticker and only charge you once.

I'd file a complaint with the consumer protection agency / State Atty's Office.. $600 for new tires on an accord? seriously? stock wheels... you could get 4 new tires mounted for $250.. complete b.s.

regardless.. tell that guy to get bent and go get new tires at at a reasonable place. The law is 2/32" to pass on tires btw..

 

Well tirerack / treadepot have a slew of 15-16" for Accords for ~$50.. the shops around here will mount & balance new tires b/w $12-15 / tire.. add disposal ~$2 / tire.. but I keep mine and resell on craigslist.

edit: btw guys.. bookmark treadepot.. I've gotten some sweet deals from them.. they are sometimes 30-40 cheaper / tire then the competition.

Sucks to live in a state where they have to inspect your car. Only thing they do here in IL is make your do emissions test every couple years.

I would advise your girl bring it to the dealership for the inspection. They charge only $10. i went to Acura of Manhattan, and they said 10$ i was like heck yea.

 

I just did my Inspection in NYS. Most mechanics try and find something wrong with your car just to make extra money even if its a sidemarker out that they charge $20 to change, I changed my brakes prior to the inspection thinking it would be a problem and the mechanic did not even look at them. It all depends where you go! It is pass or fail for $37

 

Uusually you have 10 days to correct it as mentioned. We did the same for my bros old corolla. The emissions dude gave us 10 days and we paid full for the inspection (40 bucks) and we just brang the checklist back and he passed us and sent us along the way. Didnt charge us a thing.

on tires- they may have priced the same tires as are on it, not looking for the best deal for you...but for them

and more importantly,,why are you letting your girl drive on worn out tires!!

Welll worn out tires and low tread on tires (as new york state determins) are to completely different things. The tires had plenty of tread left but I guess new york doesnt agree.

 

Well maybe for emissiosn in some states...My lil bro was granted 10 days to fix his headlight bracket that was loose. I fixed it within a day and brought it back a couple days later when he had the time and got his sticker.

 

In NC, they charge you $30 for the safety/emissions test and $5 for the sticker. If for any reason your car fails, you still pay the $30. If you get the problem fixed that the car failed for,then you can take it back to the shop that performed the inspection and show that the problem has been fixed and they will issue you the sticker for $5. I think you have up to 10 days to do it in

 

god i pay $85 for an independent inspection in NJ pass or fail... it is what he charges everyone... but he usually overlooks my illegal tints on my front windows...

 

That sucks... Over on this coast, you only pay if you pass. Even says so on the signs at the state inspection facilities.

 

to the OP, if you go in for an inspection and fail......you pay regardless, but you can fix the car somewhere else and bring it back for them to give you the sticker. With my 00 accord, I had failed my inspection 2 yrs in a row because of tire tread.... I bought new ones from a used tired shop with good tread and brought it back and got my sticker. They cannot charge you again.

 

You NYC guys really get hosed at $37 for an inspection. It's only $21 in the rest of the state.

 

Yea she ended up taking the car elsewhere cause the local Mobil station was a bunch of assholes. She got 4 tires, balance and alignment and an oil change for the same price the other place was asking for 3 tires only.

SCS- tires worn to 2/32" tread depth at any point across the tire width are worn to limits-
so it the toe was off and ate the inside edge, sorry- thats a bad tire
if over or underflated cause wear to one area- thats a bad tire

avs- those no pass no pay places also charge double what other places do!
That covers them for the cars that dont pass, and they usually get the repair work out of it too-thats the real money-smog diagnostic- fee $150 regardless if 10 minutes or 1 hour to FIND the problem plus whatever to fix it (thats CA rules)
Then they must retest- at a reduced rate usually but not required to reduce~
If you had another shop do the repairs, you will be paying ful price

 

When we lived in PA the posted signs at inspection signs always said the price and then "pass or fail". If you are a loyal customer of the place they might be willing to waive the fee but it's doubtful. Thank the Lord that we don't have to deal with inspections in FL anymore.

In NC, if you fail they give you 30 days to fix and reinspect, and at that time the inspection is free (since you paid the first time).

When I lived in Long Island I failed once, wasn't charged for that, then the guy just charged me for the part to fix.... sounds like you need to find a better mechanic.

And thats not counting when I lived in Queens and my dad's hoopty wouldn't pass... toss the guy an extra $20 and it magically passed each time lol. Like I said, sounds like you need to find a different shop. It sounds like this guy is just trying to get you to pay him for shit.

In ME you have to pay regardless if you pass or fail. Inspections are extremely strict here. A shop with an inspection license can fail you for almost anything if they want. My friends truck just failed because he had a 4" crack in the plastic splash guard under the tranny. They told him it was a safety issue. He went up the road to the chevy dealership the next day and they gave him an inspection sticker, so its not regulated very well here.

 

I'm a ny state inspector. The mechanic did everything within the laws of the state. If he said she needs 3 tires, he definitely matched the one good tire.

You have NOTHING to complain about. As an enthusiast you should be ashamed of the fact that your girl drives an unsafe car. Put some damned tires on it, then pony up another $37 and get it inspected again. BUT check the inspection receipt. Of it only failed for the tires, it might only cost you $10 to reinspect it. NY state inspections are broken down into 3 parts in the NY metro area. When you get it reinspected the new receipt will have the NY state fee on it.

 

Its actually 30 days, I went for mine today and read the rules on the DMV website while i was waiting lol.

NC also gives you a 15 day grace period for initial inspection too, which is more than most states. Pretty lenient down here.
