I Miss that New Car Smell
I've had about 7 cars in the 16 years I've been driving and the first 3-4 I pretty much had no choice but to get used cars.
Now it's all financial, I just can't bring myself to buy a brand spanking new car. I'll look for 1-2 year old cars with under 20k miles and at a pretty good discount.
But recently I've been pining for a new car, not just new to me but actually new with like 7 miles on the odometer. The smell of the leather, the plastic dash still releasing those intoxicating chemicals into the cabin the smooth wipe of the wipers on the flawless windshield.
Many of my friends and family are constantly getting new cars (And all you forum members showing off your pristine new rides) because they lease and I feel myself teetering on the edge of financial diligence and think my next car will be a new one.
Damn you new car smell.
And I know, this is a bad story, lol.

I had to drive my challenger around with the windows open for weeks. That chemical smell gave me a headache every time I opened the door.

If you cannot afford it, don't buy it new.
Sounds like you are making the right choice in buying what you can afford and let the other guy take the depreciation hit, and you come in and buy it one or two years old.

I noticed that the new-car smells are different for different brands, but miss the new car smell of American cars from the 1970s and 1980s. Yeah, probably different carcinogenic chemical smells...

I must be used to it by now (and its dissipated) but when people get in my car they still say it smells new 2.5 years and 10.9K later.

I've had people (including my dad) say that my TSX smells new. It's an '07 with almost 50k on the odometer, so I don't know what's up. I have clearly gotten used to it because I never smell it.
I will agree that the car smells good- maybe the previous owner used a strong leather conditioner?
At the end of the day, I think the bottom line is that the new car smell can be had in a year or two year old car. Let someone else take the depreciation hit!

I love the smell and feel of a brand new car also. It just feels so pristine and fresh. But there's no way I'll ever buy a new car for myself. The savings of a 2-3 year old car over a new one are astounding.
This. My car is a 2005 with 111K miles and people get in and say it smells new.
