I dont understand the whole JDM thing...
I see alot of people on my350z.com and a few other sites trying to make their cars look 'jdm'. Many have japanimation or asian chick avatars etc....try to date/brag about dating asian women...my car mods have even been criticized for not being 'JDM' enough. Why do so many people want to be Japanese? Funny thing is I used to live in Japan and it was cool there to mimic Americans. Am I missing something here...I'm part asian btw.
I honestly don't know. I think it's just a fad, and it will eventually go away if we don't pay attention to it. And I can say almost all the people that are doing this were somehow introduced to Japanaimation in the 80s with Transformers or even with something like Dragonball on Cartoon Network. They think it's cool to do everything like Japanese people, because they see it as something entirely different from their culture, and it allows them a way to rebel or..........something.

I never watched that crap and I dig the JDM stuff. However it all started out here lik 6-8 years ago. I don't see what's wrong or right about it. Everyone likes their stuff. People buy japanese cars they want japanese parts. You don't see ls1 owners going for greddy turbo's, etc.
and I don't think anyone is rebelling or trying to act japanese by doing JDM stuff. Most kids these days don't like bling and JDM is basically the opposite of bling.
I don't qualify my car as JDM looking, but a lot of people would. To me JDM is Spoon, Mugen, etc. People w/ Rota Slipstreams are not JDM.
I don't like how big it is, it's gonna get played out, but maybe it's just cause no one had dark rims when I got mine and now everyone does

you aren't missing anything zero, everyone has different tastes. Some like chrome and body kits, some like nice and subtle, some like something else.

You should very well know what the southeast has offered. It may not always be import but there has always been tuning going on. Or is it just the show look you guys are going for and no real meat??

That said, it is a simple fad or desire to look different (relative to where you live). Everyone has their own desires and goals and they are entitled to it and should be encouraged.

. True JDM means not buying rims and a bodykit that are not chrome and calling it JDM. We are taking about things like turn signal stalks, seats, sideview mirrors, headlight conversions. Basically the car looks exactly like it would in japan.
THey clown slap on some damn badges and say JDM!!
Lame.A lot of people that don't know jack shit are joining forums, buying cars and fucking the whole game up.
And yes, in Japan, speaking for Lexus, I know they love to switch their items out for ours.
People love what they can't have.

unless the seats on the other side, its not jdm.
You can have an american honda with a jdm swap, but never a true jdm.

Come spend a weekend out here in Southern Cali during the summer. Just last weekend alone there were probably 5-6 classic car shows w/ in 100 mile radius that had atleast 1,000 cars at them. YOU HAVE NO CLUE how big the car hobbie is out here. I'm by no means saying cali is the only place it's at, but this is where the brunt of the import craze started. Everyplace has their tuners, I just think out here the volume is multiplied quite a bit.
btw, I was referring to your guys mini-truck phase that still hasn't seem to disappear down there

here is a list of upcomming shows
http://www.socalcarculture.com/events.html
and weekly cruise nights

tell me somewhere else that has abundance like that :P

My point was not against the car phenomenon in California, it was against the seemingly all encompassing southeast statement. You may have clarified the remark by now focusing on the low rider truck which were always hideous. BTW, it has just about disappeared now. At least I rarely see one now and it is normally a left over.
But to add to what I was referring to; the south hasn't always been about show but has been about performance. Many of the classic performance parts manufacturers are in the south such as Holley, etc.. Heck, a single road in Memphis contains many of the larger names (many of the affiliates are in MS).

Add to that (not that I am a fan, I am not) the NASCAR channel, and subsequent trickle down, mainly centering around Charlotte; the performance market has always been very healthy here.
