Legit question here...
Whenever I see an 09 Elantra or Santa Fe, I think Hyundai came a long way in term of design and general look (even tho some may argue the front of the Santa Fe is copied on the FX35).
Now I just saw an ad on the new flagship of the korean brand: The Genesis:
http://www.hyundaigenesis.com/
Same feeling, it "looks" like a very decent car and "seems" to offer a lot for the price (including the sound system that used to be in Rolls Royce only before the Genesis).
However, $30k is a lot for a Hyundai and still doesn't seem enough for all the features they claim to offer.
So what's your opinion? Are they hidding something with their good marketing? Or are they on their way to become something big (toyota big) in the auto industry?

This has been beat to death...but my parents were just here for 4 days visiting and their rental was a new Santa Fe...I asked my dad how he liked it and said it was actually pretty nice.
I spent most of the time riding in the car and I liked it. Good ergonomics, comfy, roomy.

They're quite good. I'd take one over Nissan or Mazda

Not to beat this to death again and add to a thread on a car and brand that has been discussed a gazillion times here but I saw one on the local Hyundai lot the other day and well, it's already gone. It looks very nice. The coupe will be even nicer. Hyundai is coming up.

I HATED driving that thing, felt like a death trap.

I meant accent, not elantra...I rode in my aunts accent in the early 90's once....That was the oldest new car I was ever in...

That was uncalled for...
My dads girlfriend has an 07 Sonata V6. Other than interior styling, it's an awesome car.
I almost can't beleive how quiet the interior of that car is. There's ZERO engine noise and virtually no wind noise even upwards of 80mph... I was actually conisdering picking up a 4cyl. base model 5 speed just as a highway commuter car because it was that quiet...
It's pretty quick too...
It's definitley a good car and I can't wait to take a seat in the new Genesis, or even better the new Genesis Coupe (

Face it, the car was shit, whether it was sound or not.

So this confirms the feeling I had... Hyundai is coming up...
I guess their biggest issue right now is they have an image problem which the company has to overcome (and its direct consquences: Resale value still sucks, and you might get laughed at by some people...)
Looking closer at the Genesis ass end looks like a BMW 5-Series, silhouette looks like a Infiniti G35 4-door, and the front end looks like a Lexus IS 250.
It's like a Lego set of car design, but it is not as extreme as some chinese brands... plus if BMW or Lexus do not care... it is all good I guess. Their agressive style (copied or not) obviously please people.

The ONLY Hyundai I would consider is a Genesis coupe. The rest of their lineup, aside from the Genesis coupe, is rather.... mundane.

It bears closer resemblance to the LS460's design theme.
If anything, Hyundai finished what Acura started with the RL; a proper luxury sedan with a backbone.
Hyundai's benchmark is Toyota/Lexus, not Honda/Acura.

Considering any recent Hyundai/Kia SUV/minivan for the wife at the end of the year. For myself maybe a recent Sonata V6. 09 Sonata has an awesome interior and drove pretty nice but it was a 4 banger so no balls. Best bang for the buck. 2nd hand warranty of 5/50k is not bad neither.

Hyundai is surely for real. I hope they stay on the current course of reliable, high quality cars, at good prices, which they are currently on.
Generally people who would "laugh" at Hyundai, are the ones who can't see beyond the company that produced the "Excell" of the 80's, the Accent of the 90's etc.

What Would Don Draper Do?
to the OP: you'll find that this board is mostly pro-hyundai and recognize that they are more than decent now.
i'm very excited and intrigued by the two genesis models. i think it's more than a step in the right direction.
i agree that the main problem right now is the brand perception. most people still think of poor reliability, cheap cars, and tiny excels.
however, they're making progress in turning that around. they still have a long way to go, but i keep hearing and reading more and more about improvements in reliability and quality.
you say $30k is a lot for a hyundai, and that's mostly because of brand perception, right? so while people are scoffing at the idea of paying nearly $40k for the genesis, people have already been paying $30k+ for the veracruz. and it was only a few years ago when the thought of buying a sonata for $20k was laughable.
they still have a ways to go, but they're getting there, and they're getting there quickly.

LOL....the problem with people in North America is we used to auto makers keeping things the same way for along time. The rest of the world is in constant and faster change. We maybe not used to the fact the Hyundai changes so quickly. Not like other makers like Acura, GM, etc.

i think the new elantras look really nice, my dad made a comment the other day on how nice the new sonatas were and well the genesis, i dont think i need to make a statement on that

In 10 years Hyundai will have successfully blurred the line of quality between it, and companies like Toyota and Honda. They are doing great right now, and the Genesis is proof that they have come a long way and are willing to give customers more for less, with good build quality and nice looking vehicles.
