How long is too long to wait for an A4 Avant?
So back in March I put a deposit on a 2009 A4 Avant. I was doing a custom order (no dealers had any with a sport package) and I was told that it would be a while, August at the latest. Recently I was told it's going to have to be a 2010 model, and the delivery date is now mid-October!
Is that to be expected on an Audi, and is it reasonable given that it's a new MY? I never waited that long for a car before...

when we put our order in for our Avant in February of 2008, we didn't take delivery until June 15!
Patience my friend, patience. Feel proud knowing that you got exactly what you wanted, and didn't settle for what they had on the lot.

I never got that about Audi...
BMW seems to be so much faster and turning around custom orders. They have pretty much always told me 3-4 months when I have inquired about it, but Audi is always saying 6-9 months if not longer...

3-6 months is the norm for Audi, but usually it's 4 -6 months. 3 months only occurs when a dealership alreayd has an allotment in place where they tweak a few things to conform to what a customer wants. If that doesn't work, they have to wait till their next ordering period or something like that comes around. that is my understanding of how it works which was described to me by the sales manager who sold us our car.
Plus, the new model is being very well received meaning orders are taking a little longer then normal.
Both of our cars were purchased off of the lot so we could hammer them on pricing... so we didn't have to deal with that... but one of my neighbors waited 5 months for theirs...

Well, if he ordered X, and they are saying it will be later and a model he did not order (not that that's bad), would it hurt to ask? I know those sales guys are like vultures, but would they risk loosing a sale? Just a thought.
Dude, if you got Navi, you'll be SO glad you got bumped. The 2010s get the 3G MMI now.
I don't recall what you ordered but there are some changes for MY2010 that make it worth waiting if you got the packages or options affected.
Frankly, I'd wait. Your car is already going to be consider "a year old" so if you keep it for say 4-5 years, you'd be selling a 5-6 year old car vs a 4-5 year old one.
Great for the 2nd buyer, bad for you IMO.

I'm happy with getting a 2010, just not happy with having the delivery date change so much. Also, I have a feeling the sales guy might have known that he was out of 2009 allotment so he baited me with it knowing he would switch me to a 2010 later. It's just a question of principle. The price is $500 over MSRP which I'm ok with, I think that's fair. This dealer's invoice is also lower than other dealers I called, they shave a few hundred off the "other fees".
Is October pretty much the first time people get 2010 cars? Seems like it's about right.
I'm also happy with the 2010 changes, I get LED tail lights now, and the sports package now has to be the S-Line package, which wasn't available on the Avant 2.0 before.
My order is for Avant 2.0T Premium + Tech + Sport, grey metallic/black interior (only interior option for S-Line package)

I'm assuming you mean $500 over invoice, not MSRP. $500 over MSRP would be an awful deal.

well, if you were baited, why not take your business to a different dealer, if they will better the deal. Maybe they can give the same price but give you the 1st major service.
wouldn't it be fun to go in and tell them to stick it?

Unless the deal is better than what any other dealer could offer if you were to walk in and ask for the car they are now giving you, then it doesn't make sense to not bargain for more since they didn't originally stick to what the agreement was. If the deal they gave on the newer model is the same deal you can get elsewhere, you aren't missing out on anything then.

yup 2010 A4 Avant is going to have 3G MMI.
Me too, but that's the only way I can get the missus to agree to buy an expensive car. Has to also have the utility aspect. And the Avant happens to be the best-looking wagon out there. I'd still rather drive that than an SUV or a minivan. If I wasn't getting that I'd just end up getting a Mazda 5.
Yea it would, but I'm not sure if they really knew they wouldn't be able to get me a 2009, and also their deal was $1000 less than any other dealer I asked. And they give me the same deal on a new model year, while I think most people end up paying more for being first to get a new MY. I also don't feel like going through the effort, and it would just add to the delay.

I say try and get them to haggle a little. And enjoy the ride once you get it.
I still think OP got a decent deal... not the best deal, but not the worst deal.

I'm sure your get put at the back of the line when you custom order.
They have a bigger chance to meet many customers at once by mass producing and filling dealer lots. If they slow down mass production, they make one car for one person, versus many cars for many different people.

their ordering system allows for items within a current allotment to be modified as long as it doesn't change certain characteristics of the car, namely, color, and drivetrain. The rest of the options can be modified before their next allotment goes into production; otherwise, custom orders are handled seperately. This is the case for Audi, I don't know how merc and bimmer handle their custom orders.
Look at post #26, the OP did get it for $500 over invoice, not $500 over MSRP. Given the slumping auto market, no one is paying anywhere near MSRP for most cars these days.
btw, differences between invoice and msrp on most of audi models are roughtly $2,000 ~ $2,500. They aren't like honda or toyota, where there is huge gap in between invoice and msrp... so, if he paid $500 over invoice then he got like $1,500 off.... like I said, not a bad deal, but also not the best deal I seen.
Haven't seen it yet, but I think the Navi's like $3500 and I'm planning on getting an iPhone and use it as a GPS, so it's WAY too much. The only thing I'll miss about the Navi is the nice color info screen between the guages, when you don't get Navi you get a crappy monochrome one.
