The 4-cyl. turbo may fit perfectly in the VW compacts, but is not at home in a 40-45K$ heavy vehicle .

Most ridiculous thing is that other German carmakers are following.

Mercedes C250 4-cyl. 1.8T auto 204HP Euro combined 6.9L/100km
Mercedes C350 V6 3.5 auto 306HP (new direct injection engine for 2012) Euro combined 7.0L/100km

BMW next 4-cyl. turbo is no better, fuel economy wise.
BMW X1 4-cyl. 2.0T auto 245HP Euro combined 7.9L/100km
BMW 330i Xdrive I6 272HP Euro combined 8.0L/100km
Mercedes C350 V6 3.5 306HP Euro combined 7.6L/100km
