In a horrible predicant regarding tags
Hey everyone, let me explain my situation as brief as possible:
I recently bought a 2011 Scion tC on July 5th from a Volkswagen dealership in New Jersey. I live in Maryland. They provided me with a 20 day temporary tag (expiration July 24th).
The dealership charged me for the tag service as usual for them to do what needs to be one for me to get my permanent tags. I drove the car home with my temp tag on, everything is great. Realized half way through my trip that I was supplied with only one key and called them and they said they would look for it. They call me about one week after I bought the car saying they found it and they will mail the key with my tags. At this point I'm thinking, great, everything is going fine. Fast forward two days before my temp tags expire.
"Hey guys...so when will my tags be arriving?"
"Oh. You need to get your car Maryland inspected and send us the certificate so we can do the paperwork for your tags"
These guys never called me in the 20 days telling me I had to get the inspection. Now 2 days left, I called off work a few hours early and head to the inspection, fail the inspection because of tints that were put on by previous owner (which is illegal in the state of NJ and MD). I then take the tints off myself then go redo the inspection, pass, and overnight the certificate from FedEx to the dealership. Car is now expired at this point. No biggy, I live down the street from work so transportation isn't a big deal. At this point it is July 25th I believe. So the dealership receives it and sends it the paperwork on July 29th, as they say. I forgot to mention, NJ is not allowed to send me another temp tag, and MD cannot give me temp tags unless I have the title, but im on a lien. Today (August 8th) I call the MVA (DMV of MD) and they say they are backed up (when are they not) and the process will take another 10-15 days. So the 20 day temporary tag was never even enough to begin with.
Now here is the huge problem. I go back to college on August 28th and I commute. There is no public transportation to my college so I NEED this car for commuting. So basically, I'm asking for advice on what to do next. Who should I talk to? What legal action can I take? How do I get some compensation for all this nonsense inconvenience?
Thanks in advance and sorry for my terrible English.

I don't see legal action or compensation in your future, sorry. It starts and ends being your responsibility for not finding the procedure to be followed for each state. That would be the only way not to end up where you are now IMHO.
Suggest you go to your DMV in person to find out how to fix the situation in the fastest way possible. The alternative is to find out by going through regulations on the Internet. The selling dealer should have handled this properly but apparently dropped the ball. They should help fix it but.... G/L

This form may have helped you, but since you got it inspected, not sure you can use it anymore. Worth a try though, good luck!

I just had a similar out of state tag fiasco down here in GA. Bought a new GS350 in Jacksonville, FL and they didn't even get me my paperwork to take to the DMV until a few days before the temp tag expired. Then realized that due to the new and most idiotic law ever passed in the state I would still owe $1200 out of pocket to get a tag! Not only that, but the dealer had not included a POA to transfer the title. Long story short, I didn't end up getting the tag until today, nearly a month past the temp tag expiration date.
Moral of the story is DO NOT BUY A CAR OUT OF YOUR STATE (and do not live in the state of Georgia which has decided to punish every new car buyer with a ridiculous up front sales tax to be paid in full even on leased vehicles). Seriously considering moving to Florida...

I find the whole temp tag concept interesting. In MA no such thing exist. Bought a used ES350 last week from a private party in MA and spent 3/4 of a day between the bank, my insurance agent and the DMV. Ironically the DMV was very quick and relatively stress free.

The moral of the story here is that no one is going to hold your hand and walk you through life except your mom. So, unless you bought the car from your mom, you should read the laws and understand what needs to be done to get your car registered legally. Sorry OP. Ignorance of the law is not an excuse.
I get cars from out NJ all the time for customers and have to deal with this almost on a daily basis. It is true though, the NJ DMV is backed up. I have no idea why, but I have heard this lately. I would still drive the car, and if you get pulled over, explain the situation. If anything try to get a letter from the dealer stating the issue. Not much else you can do though,

I knew this would be a cluster after that. Walk into your MVA and let them know your temp tag expired and the dealer has not sent the title for you to register in MD... or just extend the date on the temp tag with a sharpie.
