That sucks, lets see how toyota handles it. Sounds like he went to a crappy dealer too
I'm going to guess they won't wait 3 years to fix it with a bandaid, they won't keep installing the same POS model of tranmission in multiple vehicles... and new model releases..
They may have gotten a bad batch of parts vs poor design like Honda/Acura had. Who knows... hopefully it wont take them 3 years to find out.

However it was Honda's poor design that caused it to fail
And he's refferring to GM, Ford and Chrysler. Even BMW uses a GM tranmission on some of their vehicles.

well, thats usually not the transmission. It's the transfer case that goes, and it's because so many people drive all time 4wd trucks on dry pavement all the time.
But ya Chrysler is sub-par in comparison.

BMW did something odd with their late 90's tranny's, though they were based on gm ones as stated above. They decided to put "lifetime" fliud in them.
It can only be surmised that they meant "lifetime" of the transmition, which on many e38 740's is under 100k

Honda should be ashamed of themselfs... here's how a good manufacturer handles it in a timely manner. (this is a Toyota press release) I should close this topic now
DETROIT -- Toyota Motor Corp. (TM) is calling back a limited number of its best-selling Camry sedans built in the 2007 model year in order to fix a glitch with the transmission on certain models.
The Japanese auto maker, known for its stellar quality reputation, launched the redesigned 2007 Camry in March. In a press release issued Tuesday, Toyota said six-cylinder models of the new car have the potential for the loss of second and sixth gear while being driven.
Buyers experiencing the problem are being encouraged to return the car to a Toyota dealership where it can be fixed.
Toyota said the condition is expected to affect about a half-percent of early Camry sales and the car will operate even if second and sixth gear is lost. The company said the condition usually manifests within the first 500 miles of operation and is caused by a fastener within the transmission becoming loose. Toyota has changed its production process on the Camry to ensure the problem doesn't persist in forthcoming models.
