Honda and Hyundai

Isn't Hyundai gov't backed or something? And they run Kia too, if I'm not mistaken ... and a ton of stuff, it's like a Japanese zaibatsu or something. They're effin' huge.

Looks like they might be separate companies now though.

the Hyundai Group eventually became South Korea's biggest conglomerate company (chaebol).
The best known global Hyundai brand is the Hyundai Motor Company. Hyundai Heavy Industries is the world's largest shipbuilder, and Hynix is a top semiconductor producer.

As much as I like Honda/Acura, the obvious answer is no.
Hyundai is into heavy industries, ship building, construction, automotive, high-speed train, department stores, financial services, etc, etc.
Many of the state-of-the-art high rises you see popping up in the Middle East are built by Hyundai. Some of the fastest high-speed trains in the world are built by Hyundai. Hyundai claims the title to the largest ship in the world and is considered to be the best in the industry (the British may argue ).
Hyundai-Kia Motor Group is the 6th largest auto manufacturer in the world. This means it's bigger than Honda and Nissan. The 5 companies bigger than HKMG are General Motors, Toyota, FoMoCo, DCX, and VW/Audi Group.
Hyundai's operation in the U.S. has been pretty small. If I had to put a number on it, I would say you're maybe seeing 10% of its global automotive operation, and much less than that when you consider the entire Hyundai empire. But with the new plant in Alabama, and a new Kia plant being built in Georgia, HKMG means business in the U.S. market.

HKMG has a 70%+ market share in Korea already, though.

Honda will never buy anyone.. They just too conservative. If it is good now, then no need any improvement - Honda philosophy.
Oh I bet Hyundai will beat or maybe even buy out Honda in the future. At least Hyundai (such young company here) knows that they need RWD platform for their luxury cars.
