fix it, if it runs. if it is a hose, replace it, if it on the tank then get a roll of that welding putty and slap it on, $300 for a used celica is a deal

Thanks for all the feedback guys, very much appreciated and I got a lot of useful help from you.

I'm debating if I should now sell the car stating that it has a fuel leak, for whatever I can and try to get the rest of the money back. Or should I even bother trying to fix it? I haven't done much repair work myself and I'm a bit afraid to work with gasoline, and taking it to a shop just doesn't make economical sense esp since they almost always try to make you replace everything they see...

But for $600, just call it an expensive lesson. Maybe confront the guy and hope that he takes it back. If he doesn't, just let it be.
YES, in this instance. What the devil do you thikn Buyer Beware means ?

It means you take the car to a mechanic BEFORE you buy, especially if you don't know what to look for. The Buyer is to BEWARE of the seller's tactics to sell the product. Geez, this is the very definition of the phrase.

No implied warranty of merchantability and who one earth is going to parse out the meaning of "good operating condition" as it relates to a $600 car?

I can't believe anyone would seriously think of taking the guy to court.

$300 + $1300 repair (ripoff, imo) Is still a decent deal for a celica of that body style.

In fact, I bet you could unload it on celicatech for $500 easily.

hmm that's a good idea... Thanks for the suggestion, maybe I should try selling on the celica forums... perhaps some people on there will be able to fix it and use the car... I actually kinda like the car, I really wanted to fix it but taking it to a shop doesn't make finacial sense and I don't have the skills and tools to fix it myself.

Not if the bill of sale states "seller has no knowledge of know defects" etc etc... While he in fact knew there was a defect which can be proven with the maintance records. Since it's a co-worker. Just work something out and call it a day. Not worth the trouble with claims and bad blood in the work place

The seller created the bad blood, not the victimized buyer. The seller has halved the slaes price, so not much more to do, but be glad he did.
