Thumbs up Had a GTO for a day.

I drove my friends 06 GTO around today and after driving that, I can say that I was VERY impressed. The car is very well balanced and the interior is not lacking in terms of quality. The start up rumble is what really made me fall in love. It's ashame that pontiac did not sell as many cars as it hoped too. If it didnt snow for 4 months i would seriously consider buying this car. This is coming from someone who doesnt even look twice at domestic cars. 6.0 liters+rwd = sex

Their biggest problem is the damn tires are too small and its not easy sticking huge tires on those cars so you get a lot of wheel hop from a stand still.

amen to that....I just sold my 600whp 370ci procharged gto and couldn't hookup on 275 drag radials till top of 3rd. It is a disgrace that they wont fit 10 inch wide rims in back. They did nothing right with the marketing of this car whatsoever...it got no respect.

I had an LS2 in my driveway today...haven't had a chance to drive it yet, only the good old LS1 (98 Vette) when I was 16. . After driving that Vette, I knew I wanted one later on in life or a GTO until then. It put all the other v8's I had driven to shame.

My cousin still hasn't let the 'newness' of his new vette wear off, until then no driving it for me, I'm going to try to convince him to let me drive it next week when he stops by again.

Oh well back to granny driving breaking-in the new CL tranny

My only two complaints about the car are that it is under-tired for its power and weight, and the steering ratio feels like it was lifted out of a '73 Fleetwood. Other than that, I'm in love with mine.

It's good though it's not popular. The price may drop a lot on used models in 4 years & the car could be a steal.

Mostly because it looks like a Cavalier and the interior is not nearly as nice as some of the members make it out to be.

while I don't think the interior is the greatest. It's up there w/ it's competition and the seats are some of the best i've ever sat in (if not the best stock seats i've ever sat in).

And...after 24K I don't have a single rattle...which even amazes me still. Although the trunk size blows, i've made due and haven't had a problem yet.

I agree with you 100 percent. seats are THE best seats I have ever sat in. They give the driver an awsome driving position.

I had a '04 gto. Impulse blue with blue leather. It was a fun car in a straight line. Great for cruising around. Plenty of power, comfortable, clean, subtle, nice exhaust grumble
Sucked on gas, horribly, couldn't handle for sh*t, shitty feeling gearbox, WAY under braked and under tired, HEAVY. Still loved it though, wish i had the 05 or newer
I actually had my tire hit the bottom of the strut mount in mid corner, locked up the wheel and spun me out into a tree. I was doing 40 miles an hour around a corner where there was a dip in the middle. Hit the dip and that was all she wrote. Car started to slide, i hit clutch and brake but had nothing. It was almost like the traction control was cancelling out my brakes and I just slowly slid/rolled into the trees.
After it happened, the tow truck came and we put the car up on it, you could see scrape marks on the bottom of the strut from the tire. I called my pontiac dealer and brought them my strut and tire with the flat spots on them and they said they have encountered some problems with the wheel bottoming out on the strut mount and also said that the 1st gen new gto didn't have a very good traction control system. Oh well..i still want another one though

this car actually sucks in a straight line IMO. It's a great turner if you know how to position it, and a few little tweeks to the suspension fix's it. I did a run w/ a few elises, a GT3 and a few other cars and they couldn't believe how well the car handled.

I avg 19 mpg, will get 24 on the hwy (on par w/ my wifes 4 banger accord) The gearbox is the standard T-56 feel.

But yes, the brakes on the 04's sucked.

No offense, but your accident sounds like a standard out of control RWD car. the 04 had the same traction control setup if i'm not mistaken

Sounds more to me that he was a case of the dreaded strut rub.

strut rub wouldn't cause an accident. While it does rub, it's a slight rub and isn't going to send a car out of control IMO; let alone the back end sliding out. But a high HP rwd car will do that (I know i've lost it a few times in this car).

I can guarantee the marks were there on the strut before the accident happened

I agree. The rear of the seat goes down plenty, but the front of the seat doesn't. I thought it was broken!

Agreed. I guess I figured by the way he wrote his post that it was a chronic and progressive failure that led to a catastrophic conclusion. I mean shit, dudes have shown how fragged up a tire can get from rubbing the spring perch.

Of course, it could very well be a simple driver error that was exacerbated by the fact that the GTO is so under-tired. Speaking of which, it seems like there isn't a day that goes by that I don't log into LS1GTO.com and see that somebody has crashed their goat. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD STOP WRECKING THESE THINGS. Jesus.

I actually love the way GTO's look. If I were in the market for a sports car to drive occasionally, these cars would be #1 or #2 on my list.
